I'm surprised not to find a thread devoted to this topic, so perhaps this can be added to the themed views index?

Anyway, Brian @Bonneville and I met up for a Dyxum and Drone Mini Meet this week. There will be a separate thread about that shortly, but I arrived at our meeting point slightly early and got some photos in of Braunston Marina by the Grand Union Canal, not far from its junction with the Oxford Canal in Northamptonshire.

Bravo Howard. What a super day we had, albeit the café we had intended to start at after our meticulously planned day was closed! But we still found an ideal spot to fly from and explore.

I hope to add a couple of shots from the marina later.

In support of Howard’s opening photos I took these, with a variety of cameras and lenses, during the same day:

BY2. Decorated bow

BY3. Looking for a rest stop

BY4. Spoilt for choice

BY5. DJI Osmo Pocket 3 in action

A very nice set, Brian - I like the life and congestion in BY3. In BY5 you show me taking a photo; here is the result:

The results from our drone flying can be seen over in the Advenrures in Drone Photography thread here, https://www.dyxum.com/DFORUM/topic141815_post1744110.html#1744110, and this includes a couple of alpha photos. I commend HS-2 ...

I shared my canal pictures in the streams and rivers thread.

Canal live is an interesting piece of GB culture. Some nice pictures here

Thanks, Addy.

Wouldn't you agree that it would be easier if canals had their own themed index entry here? I'd agree it's a little different in NL where canals serve functions other than leisure and transportation, but perhaps an admin will pick up on this and create the entry nevertheless.

An interesting point about canal life: the place where Brian and I were going to meet was called The Gongoozler's Rest, and I found out today that a Gongoozler is 'is a person who enjoys watching activity on the canals of the United Kingdom. The term is also used more generally to describe those who harbour an interest in canals and canal life, but do not actively participate.' Well, sign me up!

Well, in Dutch there are two words to translate the English word "canal"

First there's the word "gracht", which are the waterways running through older cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht etc., mainly used to get rid of wastewater as well as transportation inside the cities.

Secondly there's the word "kanaal", which are the man-dug waterways running through the countryside and mainly used for transportation and connections between rivers for that purpose.

I think a thread on "canal life" like it is known in the UK and to some extent France is fine and different enough from "rivers and streams". And even if people get confused it's not a big deal I think.

Once on a trip to Hoorn I saw a headline in the Noordhollandse Dagblad to a story about a beer delivery truck ending up in a small canal, 'Pils in de Plomp'.

Not only you Brits have great headlines

Plomp means a body of water here (and Google translate doesn't know this definition )
