who needs a FF image stabilised 35mm Macro?
The fact that it is stabilised suggests not intended for tripod/copy-stand but for handheld. It probably has a very short working distance which means that you may often have the subject in the shadow of the body/lens thus needing flash/lighting. About the only subject that I can think of atm is flowers? |

Looking at the videos linked to on Canon Watch it seems Canon is pushing their eye-focus.
Like I said before in the Nikon thread, I think Canon has a better lens line then Nikon. Two halo lenses and two sensible lenses. This is clearly aimed at the enthusiast, that 24-105 is a good travel lens. I think it wise to start with just one camera, look at the response and tweak the second camera before release. Price is a bit high compared to the A7m3. The only real problem for Canon is that this sits in between the 6DII and 5DIV it seems. Those two are reasonably recent cameras. Before the leaks I expected Canon would release a replacement for the 50mpx 5Ds in mirrorless. I now expect that will be the next camera. The 4k crop is a bummer. All in all it seems a decent first effort, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say. We'll need to wait for the reviews. |

More of a 'Camera Store' flyer here. Also interesting to note is the launch of three new EF range lenses including a 600/f4 as well.
Best regards, Neil. PS - Interesting to see that everyone seems to be producing 50/1.2 lenses at the moment? |

Think the statement that "we squarely aimed this to the mid range of the camera market" hints at what they were aiming it...not knock your socks off but decent enough.

We live in interesting times. I was withholding with the purchase of new FF mirrorless system and waiting for this to happen. Now to see what is Sony's response and then decide.
I still use a900 with a6000 to accompany me as the lightweight option. For me E mount has still a long way to reach the ergonomics of a900 and that is a shame. Almost everything else is there already. I am really curious about a7r mark iv - will they fix the environmental seals and change the menu, touchscreen and make the body a bit widea to accommodate more comfortable grip? Fingers crossed. I hope they will after seeing what Canon and Nikon did. |

I was looking for the opinion of the usual suspects, but I guess they're all at the launch events around the globe. All I could find was this video by the "first South African to hold the new EOS R" - it is a bit overenthusiastic.
There were a bunch of opinion videos by now with the Nikon release, weren't there? I guess it is still very early morning in the USA, maybe that is the problem. |

The native lens range does is interesting but prices are crazy.
The 28-70 f2 is a monster, the 50 f1.2 also looks like a big old size/weight. Who are they aimed at? Its not a "pro" body, according to the internet experts (single card/bad battery life). Strange, I thought they would aim at cornering the consumer/enthusiast market with this pitch, low price body/sensible priced lenses. I do believe now its a Sony/Fuji market, Canon and Nikon just seem lost in this space?? |

Just as an aside, I've been reading the comments under "Canon full-frame mirrorless system debuts with announcement of EOS R" on DPR.
It's quite incredible and extremely entertaining to read the comments there. In general, the Canon faithful seem to be split three ways. There are those who love it and think it is the slayer of A7's and Z mount. Then there are those who are ambivalent about it, that is, what's all the fuss about, still a reasonable camera but issues with this or that about it. And then there are those who are on the verge of committing suicide over it - they think so poorly of it or think it a dogs breakfast. Their beloved brand can't compete with Sony and it's killing them. Quite amazing to see such a wide gamut of differing views about it. Also, very amusing to see such over reaction and melodrama over not much of consequence. Pass the popcorn. |
