I don't like to think he would have done it on purpose but who knows?
Just tried it and furthest I can focus is shown on the attatched image.https://photos.app.goo.gl/c3p2hfnTd3GVbdAx6

Not cheap but it looked in excellent condition and I tried it out and seemed fine (obviously forgot to try using at infinity as by the time I felt the house in the middle of Wales it was dark).
It is the tele apo macro version.
Cheers

Right model , wrong sample !

I have one in A mount and it's quite satisfactory .
There are better 400mm lenses to buy , but their a hell of a lot more expensive than this .
I can't justify spending the extra , though I'm often tempted .....

Might be worth checking on a Nikon camera to make sure it's faulty before going round and chinning him one !

What area do you live ?

I think the question was more what is the distance from the camera that is sharp when you put the lens in that position?
Mind the bandwidth of others, don't link pictures larger then 1024 wide or 960 pix high, see here

That's correct .

Turning a lens to the infinity mark doesn't say anything .

It's a question of from where your stood , how far away can you focus on something .
10 metres , 20 metres , 50 , 100 ?

The furthest the lens will focus is approximately 40 feet/12 metres

With the lens set to infinity , the only way of the actual point of focus being 30 feet is with a good inch or morr of extension tube .

This is definitely nothing to do with the adapter , assuming your adapter is only about 3/4" long , almost the same as your Minolta MD adapter .

It definitely sounds like the lens was dismantled to clean up haze and was badly put back together .

Presumably you went to his house and paid cash ?
Bought and sold as seen , after you tested it ?
