Capitol Columns, National Arboretum

A sunny (finally!) winter day was the catalyst for a visit to the National Arboretum in Washington D.C. One hour in the garden? Only enough time to explore the Capitol Columns. The pictures were processed using DXO Photolab (it was on sale).

This is a very familiar subject to me, one I visit every time I am in Washington. Along with the Teddy Roosevelt Monument (and island), they are the two non-iconic but very fascinating and special locations in D.C. Many natives do not know about either. I have never taken them with people present, liking the simplicity and austerity they present so this is a quite different look to me. I especially like #3 with the great splash of interest and color with the bike in the foreground - nicely seen.

What a strange, almost surreal site. A folly of neo-classical Corinthian columns, not looking quite right without the fluting, set alongside a reflecting pool.
Looking very beautiful in that golden light.
I really like them all, with the standouts for me being ##2 (I love contre-jour), and 9.

I am going to go against popular opinion and state that for me inclusion of people works better, specially in #9 which is fine image with good light. Only improvement here would be if you had a choice to have that warm light illuminating the couple in image.
#10 would be better upside down and with a small pebble thrown in the water to make a small ripple. Maybe try out next time if you have a chance.
Inclusion of birds in #1 creates nice mood.
#2 is also nicely composed. I think that closing more aperture would benefit this image creating more shadows.
The ones that are the least interesting in this set are #6 and #8.

But don't count on that pool being so pristine. I have been many times and it has been either empty or filled with brown, unattractive water. Perhaps they now maintain it. In either case you made wonderful use of its reflective qualities (or you have some amazing processing skills ).
