Photos taken during a visit to Istanbul, Turkey in May 2015. Some posted in various Open Views threads, but consolidated here in Cities of the World.

1. Topkapi Palace, now a museum of precious art, calligraphy, relics, treasures and a showcase of Ottoman architecture and decor.

Now some photos of the great Hagia Sophia, Istanbul originally a Christian orthodox cathedral by the Roman Emperor Justinian, then a Moslem Mosque, and now a museum. The largest dome in the world from its construction around 500AD until St Peter's was built in Rome 1,000 years later.
During the Moslem Mosque period, the Christian mosaics were not destroyed, but were plastered over, and are now revealed in all their glory alongside the Islamic calligraphic shields and other emblems.
A magnificent building and masterpiece of engineering in every respect - awe inspiring.

Plus some photos of the magnificent Sultan Ahmet (Blue) Mosque, inspired architecturally by the Hagia Sophia. Famous for its aesthetic purity, proportion, and magnificent blue glazed tiling, it is an awe inspiring place to be in and to experience.

Finally, some street photos taken in and around Taksim Square, and last three at a pre-Election rally where supporters of that party happily danced in the public square next to Yeni Mosque, Istanbul.
