A true disaster, here's how it looked in 2006 from the side we see most TV footage this evening. I hope they can rebuild large parts, but it will take years and millions, and it will never be the same

Pieter - A truly fitting image for tonight and all the bad news that it has brought. I can recall our Dyxum Meet there a few years ago and Julie asked 'did we go in' to which I replied "no; we thought we'd leave it to another visit in the future".

How telling that phrase is now for I fear I will never, ever, see this historic monument restored in my photographic lifetime. All we can hope is that there is no loss of life nor injury to anyone undertaking the battle against the blaze.

With a sad heart tonight, Neil.

Notre Dame Paris - heartbreaking news to wake up to.
Here are a few exterior and interior images from past visits.

It will certainly be painstakingly restored, as has been the case with the great Gothic cathedrals at Reims, Rouen and Amiens, all of which suffered catastrophic damage during both World Wars, and have been reconstructed authentically and meticulously.
It will take many decades and millions of Euros, but I have no doubt it will be done. However, various precious artworks, artefacts and objects are lost for ever.
I was interested to read just now how badly damaged Notre Dame had been during the Hugenot riots and again desecrated after the French revolution, and that it had been semi derelict for many years until its restoration following its capturing of the public imagination through Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", and then the reconstructive work of Eugene Viollet-le-Duc who was responsible for that wonderful spire over the transept that has just collapsed in the fire.

A sunday morning at the corner of Avenue de la République and Rue Rampon.

Almost as empty as today, only two Dyxum members to be seen (Patrik and Manfred), but this is almost 8 years ago.

Pieter, you should see Bastille now! It's been totally restructured with a huge pedestrian and bike way surrounding the statue and leading out to the canal on the opposite end from this photo. The construction isn't 100% finished because it got stopped before it could be completed with the confinement, but it's really nice and it's WAY safer for cyclists now.

Well, maybe it's time for another "Imagine Paris" somewhere next year, so we can all see how it improved (or changed)

The image above from Place de la Bastille was taken during the Dyxum meeting in Paris in 2012. The photo below is from oktober 2006, almost a year before I even joined Dyxum , time flies

A scanned Ektachrome 35mm slide taken from the top of the Arc de Triomphe looking down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées towards Place de la Concorde. Taken in 1970 when the vehicular and foot traffic were very much lighter than nowadays.
