Turku (or Åbo in Swedish) is a city in the Southwestern Finland, that was founded in late 13th century. Already during the Swedish rule it was a major city in the eastern part of the kingdom and when Finland was ceded to Russia in 1809, it became the official capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland. However, the Great Fire of Turku in 1827 caused such major damage that this status was withdrawn and Helsinki became the capital. 1. Signum House of University of Turku - Turku is an university town, although the current universities (Finnish language University of Turku and Swedish language Åbo Akademie) were founded only in last century, the Royal Academy of Turku was established in 1640, but after devastating Great Fire of Turku in 1828, this original university was moved to Helsinki and became the current University of Helsinki ![]() 2. Turku Cathedral is still the mother church of whole Lutheran Church of Finland ![]() 3. Since Turku is on the mouth of river Aura, the river and number of bridges are significant feature of the city center ![]() 4. ![]() 5. The building in the center of the picture behind the bridge is the city hall ![]() 6. In addition to bridges, there is also a ferry called Föri for pedestrians and cyclists shuttling across the river. ![]() 7. Another historic sight of the city is of course the Turku castle ![]() 8. On the top of Kakola hill there are the former buildings of Turku Prison, which has now relocated to more modern premises further away from the city center. ![]() Edited by Hezu - 21 August 2017 at 20:10 |

As mentioned, being a city in mouth of the river Aura is one significant feature of Turku:
9. July 2017 brought the Tall Ships Races to Turku. Although the white sail ship on the left, Suomen Joutsen, is permanently moored to the riverside as nowadays she is part of the maritime museum Forum Marinum's collections. ![]() 10. On the riversides, there are also some permanently moored restaurant ships, like this Wanha Rahtilaiva (~ Ye Olde Cargo Ship) on the left. ![]() 11. Turku has also considerable history in shipbuilding and although Meyer Turku continues the tradition, that shipyard is no longer at the mouth of Aura, but on the riverside there are some old cranes left from the earlier shipyards. ![]() |

The city was in the news lately, unfortunately. You show a side the news doesn't report. I like it!
I also liked your report on the Tall Ships in Turku. |

I do have few more old pictures from Turku, but as I don't live there and so far only visit once or twice a year, I cannot promise very frequent updates once my archives are exhausted. And probably no pictures of locations very far from the city centre as the mode of transport I usually use there is my own feet. But I guess, I could also add few new (or old) pictures to the other city thread, I have started, since there I visit far more often...
But now, few older pictures as I promised... 12. And this is how the river looks like when the ships of Tall Ships Races are not there (taken aboard Föri (shown in #6), so roughly the same place as #10, but in the middle of the river) - only the museum ships Suomen Joutsen and Sigyn are moored on the riverside. ![]() 13. Logomo is an event centre in Turku built in an old train maintenance halls. Last year it hosted Finnish Nature Photographers' Association's annual Nature Photograph of the Year event and the entrance hall was filled with exhibitions and few stands for some enterprises and organizations: ![]() 14. While the program of various nature photo presentations were held in the main auditorium, which offers space for quite large audience (and the size of that hall can be resized as the whole seating stand can be moved forward and backward!). ![]() 15. And of course the gala ended with the revealing of the competition winner, which was that picture shown on the screen "Kiiruna maailman laidalla" (~ Rock ptarmigan on the edge of the world) by Juha-Pekka Paananen (yes, he is the guy on the left of the stage with flowers and the diploma) ![]() |

16. As I have mentioned quite a few times earlier: the river Aura flows thru the city
![]() 17. Turku Art Museum with posters for its Tyko Sallinen exhibition ![]() 18. The museum building from another angle ![]() 19. Those were the days: In 1977 City of Leningrad donated City of Turku this Lenin stutue. (And yes, some vandal has altered the text: lahja = gift => lahna = common bream) ![]() 20. Couple older wooden houses on a hill ![]() 21. Turku Main Railway Station ![]() And if somebody wonders about why the Finnish flags are flying on the flag poles, that is because these were taken on October 24th, which is the United Nations day. |
