Looking at the Scheldekwartier website both buildings will remain. The Carpentry factory is a national monument, why they keep the machine factory I do not know - it is a common industrial building. They think, I read, that can easily be re-used, but still, it is not interesting at all imho.

Why do you think it will not be pretty?

TY Addy! (good to 'see' you!).
(sorry! took a few ...days! to dig up old pics ).

because such building density won't be pretty? (MHO). not to mention excessive heights? there won't be an inch that won't be 'developed'.
(and asking for ideas, btw, to develop the former slipway as well).

Schelde terrain & machine factory

as all presentations in project developer's language, it all sounds brilliant.
(it reminds me of Asterix & de Romeinse Lusthof / the Mansions of the Gods -familiar?- and if it would be in a comic book, I'm sure the text would be wreathed with little flowers). but doesn't it strike you that it starts with a pic at the beach? evoking emotions, but I can assure you there is no beach on the terrain of the shipyard.

this, again!, has nothing to do with beautifying, improving OUR city. or providing houses for locals. pro forma, some social housing is part of the plans, but the main purpose is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. and, as the council said- it's out of their hands now, all up to the project developers. and the brokers are lining up to fill their pockets. (I mean, WHY TF would a broker from Rotterdam sell Flushing real estate? (?)). because this plan doesn't serve the city and its inhabitants? same thing happened at the boulevard, developers from Amersfoort (!) a.o. but, apart from ruining the most unique boulevard in the world?, at least it was beneficial to locals, who bought their flats there. + a view.

you'd be more than welcome as a guest in the carpentry factory hotel, to bring your $$$$$$$$$$ here. and if you are really loaded- to buy yourself a pied-a-terre with a view. (which will become OUR view! ) for holidays, a weekend perhaps, only. the idea is to rent it out to tourists, to get your slice of the cake.

on the right- skeleton metal sheet factory

we are glad both factories will be preserved. the Zware Plaatwerkerij / metal sheet factory would be 'preserved' as well.
and it was. went from 'this' -scroll down- into 'this'.

2015- metal sheet factory in the process of being 'preserved'

now take a look at the presentation- behind the link you provided?
cleverly presented from bird's eye view, it all looks smooth and polished. see that little innocent looking tower with a cleverly designed swirl? (I like the swirl ;)). very prestigeous, our new landmark, tallest in Zeeland, yet. this monster (aka 'dildo', yes) will be 97 meters tall. advertised as no less than '100 meters' tall. now take a look at THIS? (2nd pic!!!). now that is something, isn't it?    and see the text? (outlet) Zeeland on sale! also on sale here - boosted by the power of beautiful photography (or can you explain what a semi transparent lady + vintage camera have to do with the future of OUR city?).

in front of the 1914 carpentry factory

plans to turn the engine factory into a parking lot for apartment owners of the massive tower. pretty carpentry factory in the process of being 'preserved' at the moment. it immediately went wrong, from the very start: 'emotions running high after they knocked out the steel framed windows' -dutch-.

-to be continued?-
