Show us cities of the world is your chance to show us where you live, or where you've been. Please feel free to share pictures from this location, or start a thread for a new location. The usual Dyxum content rules apply- but to assist fellow Dyxumers inspired to visit locations that are shown, please indicate where in your town/city the photos were taken.

Probably the most well known structure in Ypres is the Menin gate, carrying the names of almost 55.000 killed soldiers from the British Empire in WW1 near Ieper that have no known grave.

It was built in 1927 and since 1928 every evening at 20:00 the Last Post is being performed there. This daily tradition was only forbidden by the Germans during the 1940 - 1944 occupation during WW2.

Walking through the gate and looking at many panels filled with names followed by witnessing this Last Post performance is a sobering experience, but very worthwhile and valuable "lest we forget......"
