Sometimes people do great jobs in cities ... then, there is Plymouth.


Charles church, Plymouth was entirely consumed by fire in March 1941, a victim of the 'Plymouth Blitz'. After the war the decision was taken to preseve the ruins as a memorial to the 1200+ victims of the bombing raids.

However in the early 2000s Drake's Circus shopping centre was built, forming an unwelcome backdrop to the monument. When the development opened in 2006 the shopping centre won the inaugural Carbuncle Cup "for crimes against architecture", as the worst new building in the United Kingdom.

Here on the north side I shot the photo at an angle to make the road level, but there is an incline and I have adjusted it, using the bus shelter and railings as the guides to being upright.
