This could been also titled as Second Day of 2024 as these photos were taken on the afternoon of January 2nd 2024. This year did start with very cold weather in Finland and although in New Year Day evening I did head to the warmer south, the day temperature in Helsinki were still -15°C or bit colder. I thought that was still enough to observe a phenomenon caused by cold air and reasonably warm sea water, so I decided to head to Suomenlinna in the afternoon to see if I could snap some nice photos.

1. At South Harbour much of the sea was covered with ice, but further away one could see open water

2. The ferry route to/from Suomenlinna was clearly visible

And when zooming towards the open sea, one could see the phenomenon I was looking for:

3. Sea smoke

4. The cloud cover over the open sea was also interesting feature

5. Walls on Pormestarinluodot had got frost covering

6. Strait between Pikku Mustasaari and Iso Mustasaari
(~ Small and Big Black Island)

7. Sun was already quite low

8. The navigation aids were barely visible amongst the fog

9. Interesting lump of ice

(I think somebody had placed that ice that way, didn't quite look natural in that position)

10. There were sun dogs on the sides of the sun

11. Parhelion coloured cloud

12. Couple of gulls in flight

13. Border guard coastal patrol boat was returning to the base at Suomenlinna

14. Following the route marked with the navigational aids

15. Towards the strait

16. Navigation aids

17. Soon the sun would be behind the clouds

And once the sun was behind the clouds I started to make my way back. At one point I had thought about staying well into evening as there was some chance of northern lights, but my fingers were already quite cold (despite good gloves and even a hand warmer inside the outer mitten), so instead I took the next ferry back to the mainland. But enroute, I could see some nice scenery...

18. Route through ice

19. Ice covered and open sea

20. Islands, sea smoke and sunset

I think I'll add few additional photos from this trip to Dyxum Themed Views, but thanks for looking and any questions and comments are welcome as usual.
