Ok, I know this isn't an M42 lens but I wanted to share this anyway with those pursuing alternative lenses.

I just recently got this lens and an adaptor and let me tell you, it lives up to it's reputation. First casual testing reveals a very sharp and contrasting lens with good color and one in which the RAW image sharpens up very cleanly in photoshop. The graduation of colors and the detail in the shadows is very pleasing. I haven't pursued adapting this to my 7D yet and just realized that I don't know if it can be, duh! But if possible I would strongly recommend adding this to you list of lenses to consider.

Here's a couple quick test shots:

7xi,XG-7,XD-7,XE-7,7sII/ Canon 40D & 5D, 400/5.6,70-200/2.8,Leica 90/2.8,135/2.8,60/2.8 Macro,50/2, 180/3.4 APO Contax 28/2.8,35/2.8,50/1.4, 85/2.8, 100/2.0 Pentax 50/1.4,135/3.5
Nikon D300,800/5.6

it look very very sharp and contrasty:) i'm not surprised either, this beast is head to head with min 28/2 by photodo MTF charts.

but i think there is a problem with colors.. PP? or wrong WB?

Ummm, what specifically on the colors?   I'd say the flowers are dead on and the top one was shot late afternoon in strong (yellow) light. Here at work it looks washed out but at home on my calibrated monitor it's fine. Personally, I'd say any color issues are my fault for lack of photoshop skills. But, after a weekend of shooting this lens on the Canon and a Minolta 50mm on my 7D I can say with certainty that the two systems capture color differently. I don't worry about this too much as I usually do what I want with the colors in photoshop.

Cool, the first shot is a bit bland. It is the desert and I actually pumped them up a bit from reality. Usually to make and image pop I will use USM with settings of 30/60/0 but in some examples like this one it looks too fake. In the flower shot I actually desaturarted the red a tiny bit as it is quite strong in the RAW file. This seems to be a common problem as my 7D blew out reds all the time in my fall scenics. Another plus point of the 30D for me was the RGB histogram and hopefully Sony will add that to thier next body.

Here's two more shots with the Distagon taken this weekend:

These printed really strong with great sharpess and really good detail in the shadows.

I like the second two a lot, Jim! Yeah, it's hard to get the color of sage to pop isn't it? That must be near Huntsville?

Kelly, you are right, the Middle Fork area in the valley. The water shots were at Provo Falls in the Uinta right as the sun was coming up. I had to work fast before the light got in there and made it too tough to shoot.

I am not sure. Most folks say the 25mm is softer and that the 28mm is top of the class in that focal range. All I know is the level of detail is awesome and does not come through in these low-res jpgs. The level of detail obtained with a little post processing sharpening (USM or smart sharpen) is impressive.

New Distagon 25 is a very different design that old Distagon 25, which allegedly was softer than expected for a CZ prime lens.

Actually, ZF 25's MTF looks better than MTF of C/Y 2,8/28 (let alone C/Y 25!).

I still have to know whether that translates in real-world performance.

Edit: BTW, great pictures, james! They have to look superb when huge-size printed.

I had a request on another forum to see an unprocessed shot from this lens. So, here's a crop at resolution from one of the above shots. No processing other than the crop and saving it as a low res jpg.

One more shot from the Distagon. You should see the detail in this baby when printed large!
