Are there any of you who have done this conversion who are willing to do it for me for a few bucks?

How much difference are there between doing a conversion and just use an IR filter?

My recommendation - don't do it if you are not prepared to end up with a dead camera. I have destroyed mine.

Second recommendation (if you have ignored the first one): if you want to cut the IR filter ask a professional. It only has cost me 2€.

I'm curious how noticeable is the sharpness increase after the conversion. Anyone has a before/after photo samples in RAW?

Hi everyone. I just had a go at this but hit a snag with the bit that says "Be careful with this spring". Mine popped out. I haven't lost it, but cannot work out how it used to fit. Can anyone help?
Cheers.

I see DeX has not been active for over a year. He might still respond to a PM. Good luck with your query!

Hei Chewie,

Don't panic, same thing happened to me the first time I did the conversion and I looked for the spring for half an hour and I couldn't find it. It is possible it just stuck to one of the magnetic parts in the camera.

I gave up and reassembled the camera without the spring and it seemed to work OK for me so it might not be that important.

Now if you want to reassemble it, from memory, it was putting tension between the small silver part and something behind the black CCD assembly.
I can be of more help if you send me some pics of the area and the spring.

Cheers.

@Malina

You notice some sharpness increase but the A100 already has a very weak low-pass filter to start with so it's very sharp from factory. I don't have before/after pics of the same thing for comparison.

You do notice it tends to create more Moiré patterns, however.

Just had to say what a fabulously written article. Very meticulous as regards detail too. Excellent work.

Thank you Frank and Dragos.

I have one question: Why did Dragos specify a Hoya filter? Does the Hoya filter have specific characteristics or is it a cost issue?

Thanks again.

I see no one has answered your question, so I will make a guess. I don't think there is probably anything special about the Hoya R72 filter, but it is a quality filter that is very commonly available.

Thanks. That's my guess as well.

I have found somebody who has the skills to do a very good conversion at a very good price. The only thing is: That person insists on a a manual to convert my Sony A550. I have read in this intrasting article that A100 and up untill SLT is basicly the same. Is this correct?

I own a A100 IR camera already two yeras, but I am really missing the liveview.
I like down to earth photography. :)

Thanks for the great post! I followed the advice of a friend, and I was on the street to cut IR filter In glazing, I paid only R$ 10.00 was very nice and clean! I advise everyone to pay a professional, friend the glazier! The cut was really clean!

Still studying and taking courage to dismantle the Alpha 100.

Take this opportunity to ask if 32.8 x 23 mm is too big or to fit the CCD box. Or I'll have to reduce sanding the glass?

Thank You Very Much!

Daniel
