Well i guess somebody has to start this off. Caught up with Rosie and Graham on Sunday afternoon (and also bumped into another Dyxum member Anthony it is a small word) down on the Yarra here in Melbourne where they were holding the Annual Moomba water festival.
One of the feature of the festival is the Moomba master water skiing on the Yarra. It was a long day and lots of shots were taken by all lots and lots of water skiing shots were taken so i hope we don't bore you all too much the day did end up with a very nice fireworks display which i still have not processed yet. Scott l like 1, 2, 3 & 10, l can't believe they aren't wearing wetsuits for protection, pretty confident aren't they!
l'll have to get one of those Min 300mm f4 or a Sigma 100-300 f4. They look the duck guts. |

Fantastic shots and don't worry, any guy would probably agree that this isn't boring. Does it get any better sunshine, girls and sport, only the beer is missing Keep 'em coming.

You've captured some nice action shots Scotty. The wall of water is very effective as a backdrop. I'd maybe suggest cropping some of these from the top to lose distractions like billboards, onlookers etc, although you will lose "headspace". Nevertheless, you've nailed the exosures in tricky conditions.

Love the dynamics in all of these but especially 1,2,4, 7 and 10. Number 2 is perfectly sized (and cropped?) to focus down on the skier with the rooster tail providing great contrast. Number 4 is also a really different shot - concentrated on the water spray and leave the skier in the shadows - helps to give a feeling of the speed and forces involved in shifting this much water about. Similar theme to number 7 where the calmness of the water gives a great contrast to the skier, but I wish there was just a little more light in the skiers face (it looks a little dull on my monitor but that could be my settings).
Pat - you don't comment on what camera/lens combo you used - also what shutter/aperture settings were generally used; looks like a high shutter speed to capture the water so well. A great set and look forward to seeing more from this event (Cue the rest of the Dyxum 'crowd' present? ) Kind regards, Neil. |

I went down with the wife and bubs. On my travel i recognized Rosie on the water front and a male, I now know as Scott, wearing a black tshirt with a strange symbol resembling that of dyxums' logo.
I introduced myself - "Are you Rosie from Dyxum" I had a startled Rosie look at me with her great but curious smile and say "yes" I met Graham later during the fireworks, who was quite helpful in aiding me in techniques for fireworks. (Don't blame hime if the fireworks shots aren't that good) It was really good to see some of the "internet people" in real life. To the photos First up water skiing. a700 70-200 2.8 sigma hsm 1. 2. "If you gotta go you gotta go" (cropped) 3. 4. - My favorite - (cropped) 5. The sun went down and the Moomba Lights came on - Festival time 6. - Welcome to the house of fun (cropped) cz 16-80 7. 8. Thats really nice. I think, everyone would like to see the faces behind Pat Malone, RosieA100 and the others - did you take some shots of the Aussie Dyxumers?

Ski shots -
#5 would be my favorite if the boat was missing! #3 is my favorite #10 would be my favorite if the top was cropped a bit so only the spray/skier were showing. Great exposures of a difficult subject. |

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions on the first series.Come on Rosie and Graham lets see some of your work from the day.
Very nice shots there Anthony you really captured the speed of the skiers and the boat there and the firework shots are excellent . All right here is my second set this one will feature the wake boarders there were very difficult due too the cluttered backgrounds. Great images guys I have had a few "issues" with the internet since I got back so haven't even looked at the pics much... will try to get some on tonight or tomorrow... (most will be the same as the others though, how many skiing pics do you all want to see???)
