We had a wonderful time when we met yesterday. More stories and pictures will follow, but here's the obligatory group shot to start the thread off:
At the Memorial Register under the Menenpoort in Ieper. |

I agree Dave, and "chimping" seems to be popular up north as well as down under
Rosie and Anne "chimping" the group shot that Rosie took. By the looks of it that one came out OK as well, but will probably not be posted before Rosie is back home. |

Very nice, small and cosy meeting.
I have enjoyed it very much, and it was a pleasure meeting Rosie. I just finished PP, so I'm starting posting tomorrow. grtz Edited by AnneM - 10 April 2009 at 01:18 |

Bert, we just love to keep people in suspense
My pics will start trickling in over the weekend, Anne is planning to start today and Rosies will probably have to wait until after she's back home on April 19. Sit tight, more will come |

Anne, B&W is very fitting for these pages. Nice shots.
This inscription in the Menen Gate in Ieper tells it all: There's more than 57.000 names inscribed in the walls of this gate. All of men from the allied forces who were killed but did not get a registered own buriel place or were missing. A very sobering experience and you only get how much it really are by walking all the inside and outside walls and just look at the endless rows of names, names, and more names........ I would think his name is somewhere on the Menen gate as well, but we'll never know which one: If you want to read more about it you can look here |

Let's get some color back in the thread:
The last post association has been givin daily bugle calls at the Menen gate since it's completion in 1928, only paused during the second world war. The day we were there it was the 27717th time they held the cermony. The buglers are members of the local fire brigade. Very impressive and moving ! Here you can read more about the last post association |
