About Dyxum Weekly Exhibitions

The Dyxum Exhibitions were established to provide recognition for some of the many great shots which are posted in the non-competition forums (mainly Themed Views and Open Views).

Eligibility Of Photos
  • Shots will only be considered for inclusion in an exhibition if they were taken with A-mount cameras (digital or film) or E-mount cameras.

  • Shots are sourced from the Open Views, Themed Views, Assignments, Critics Corner and Sample Images forums. Shots entered in DPCs or alternative versions of shots entered in DPCs will not be considered for selection.

  • Only newly posted shots will be considered (i.e. all shots that were posted previously on Dyxum will be discarded).

  • Posters may be asked to re-size a nominated shot to meet our display criteria (optimum sizes are between 900 and 1024 pixels wide for a horizontal or 760 and 910 pixels high for a portrait). Oversized shots are now automatically downsized.

Exhibition Preparation Rules

Selecting photos for the exhibition requires a lot of effort (in principle: one has to review all photos posted in a week). In addition to that the selection process should be as objective as possible - this should not be done by a single person. Because of this the following system has eventually been established:

  • Photos for consideration for Exhibitions are "harvested" by AMAEs. Simply, each AMAE can add any photo he likes (with the restriction to the above posted eligibility rules) as a candidate for the exhibition. Other members are also welcome to assist with this process (e.g. by reporting some shot as worthy for the Exhibition),

  • On Thursday mornings the exhibition is closed for candidates (and a new exhibition is opened for candidates at the same time),

  • After some preparation (all photos are put together in a form of a numbered list) the exhibition is open for voting which is for numbered shots rather than by photographer's name,

  • The voting is simple: each AMAE has the right to select from the candidates as many photos as he likes - he presents just a list of numbers corresponding to the candidate photos,

  • On Firday mornings voting gets closed, all nominations are counted and the list of candidates is ordered from the highest number of votes to the least. Then the list is trimmed to give no more than 20 photos which will make it to the exhib (treat it as a rule of a thumb rather than a strict rule).

  • The photo which gathered the most nominations becomes the Photo Of The Week (unless there is a draw, in which case the exhib administrator has the right to select the "first among equals").

  • After selection is done the final exhibition post is compiled (photo from the past is selected at random from all photos available in the "past" exhib thread) and published

  • Members whose photos got to the exhib usually get PM notification about this

The whole process takes part "behind the scenes" but that's the beauty of the Weekly Exhibitions - it is a bit of a surprise to all Dyxumers (well, except the AMAE team)

Since the post above was made we have allowed non-administrative members to also nominate shots for inclusion.

See.

Note that it is important to make such nominations during the correct time period.
