Recently the Finnish coast has had unusually low waters (note, this is not related to tides since on shores of Baltic Sea there isn't any) and thus some areas that usually are below water are now above waterline. Monday evening I decided to check out this water situation at Kallahdenniemi beach in Vuosaari, Helsinki.

1. Sun was already quite low and I also noticed sundogs on the sides

2. The land in front is normally under water

Landscapes with shoreline further away from the land than usual was not the only reason why I decided to go there: I also expected to see some birds wading in the shallow water. And quickly I spotted the first ones:

3. Common ringed plower (Charadrius hiaticula)

4. Hooded crow (Corvus cornix)

5. After a while small flock of ruffs arrived

6. Ruff (Calidris pugnax)

α1 + Sony FE 5.6-6.3/200-600 G OSS + 1.4 TC @ 840 mm, f/9, 1/1600, ISO 4000

7. Ruffs

8. A small step for a bird...

α1 + Sony FE 5.6-6.3/200-600 G OSS + 1.4 TC @ 840 mm, f/9, 1/1600, ISO 8000

9. Finding something to eat

10. Evening meal

11. Ruff wading in the shallow water

α1 + Sony FE 5.6-6.3/200-600 G OSS + 1.4 TC @ 840 mm, f/9, 1/1600, ISO 3200

12. Getting closer

Eventually the ruffs decided to fly away (and of course, for some reason I wasn't quite ready to snap bird in flight photos ), but little further away there was still one wader:

But since it was around sunset time, the light was fading and my lens (esp. with the teleconverter) isn't that good for low light situation, so it was time to concentrate on capturing few landscapes before heading back home.

14. Sunset

15. Beach

Yes, there was quite a few other people around and it was slightly inconvienent for my landscapes, especially as my shutter speeds were neither short enough to stop movement nor long enough to hide moving subjects. And yes, I didn't make any record of what setting I used in the variable ND filter.

But this was nice evening photo session, although I have to mention that perhaps I didn't have the most optimal equipment as the area where I walked was bit muddy and I wasn't quite prepared for so wet conditions.

Thanks for looking!

The shots where the sun is visible look very good. Also like the birds, especially #8 and 9. The others are somewhat dark - although it works in #10 as a silhouette. Great work Heikki, TFS

I like the bird silhouettes, especially 5 and 10. And the sunsets are very nice as well. TFS!

Wonderful set, wonderful light, wonderful mood!

My favorite is the last one - with the bird close-ups following just behind!

TFS, Heikki!
