So apparently there is a firmware update (v1.1) in Asia (as fas as i know in HK and Taiwan) for the f60m to improve the overheating issue. Talked to Sony Canada and we dont have it yet....if anyone can check with their respected Country? And report back with test result that would be great.

The update will keep the flash going for a good 40-50 full power flash.

No download yet on Sony Asia Pacific support, assuming the flash is capable of receiving an upgrade.

Base on the info I got from fellow Sony user in HK. The update is performed by the service center and is non-reversible. Which inline with the reference link from the Taiwanese forum. So we wouldnt see any download link from Sony website but send in for service. BTW, the update is free. Im "patiently" waiting for the update land Canada....

I hope this firmware update fixes the over heating issue.
I had to shoot a wedding this weekend for a good friend of mine.
I used an A77II and A7 with 3 F60m flashes all plugged into external battery pack. All of the flashes over heated at least twice.
So frustrating.

Does anyone know if this FW update is available from Sony USA support?

Yes, it does fix the overheating issue, but all I can say is "ask Sony".

I Just contacted Sony Support here in the USA. They do not have an ETA on when they will be performing the upgrades. All they told me was they usually are a month behind of Asia

Look for an announcement shortly...from Sony Canada, I can't speak for any other jurisdiction.

I've had the update for several weeks. The update took very little time, namely because I was the only one having it done. I didn't ask how involved the update was or if anything was added/removed from the internals of the flash.

With my F60, after a few shots, I could feel the battery compartment getting warm to know that I would soon get the overheat warning on the display. With the new firmware, I was able to take over 200 shots using the low burst rate shooting option (A99) and not only did the batteries stay cool, but the overheat warning never appeared.

I wrote a message to Sony Germany. And as usual, they didn't read the mail properly or don't care... I wrote that there is an update for this unit
available at Asia and that the procedure is to send in the unit to get it serviced/updated and that I'd like to know when it will be avaiable in Europe/Germany.

The answer was
"Unfortunately we currently do not have information on the availability of new update for your device.

Once a new update available, you can download this here:

http://www.sony.de/support/de/product/HVL-F60M"

So they don't know about the update or/and about the service-procedure.

When it's available here in the US I will certainly send in my F60 even though I wasn't affected too much by the overheating. v1.0 flashes will tank in resale value.

I have contacted SONY Australia, I will see if I hear anything back, let alone anything positive :) My past dealings with SONY Aus. have been .... less then stellar :) but I will reserve judgement

-----

Well there reply was speedy enough.

Hi Trevor,

My name is Sale. Thank you for your email and for your patience whilst awaiting a response.

I have read your email and understand that you are enquiring about a firmware upgrade for the HVL-F60M.

I gather from your email that you have attained the information from an online forum as through the link provided.

I can confirm for you Trevor that we do not have a firmware update available for your flash.

I can confirm I have searched though the Sony Asia Pacific website and there is no update available on their website.

Moreover, firmware updates for a different region are specifically produced for models and units distributed in those regions.

However, if this does not answer your enquiry, please feel free to reply to this mail and I will do my best to look into the matter further.

Also, if you happen to call our customer services team on 1300 13 7669 AU / 0800 766 969 NZ (Mon - Fri 8am-6pm. EST), please quote this reference number C-0002706???, as I have saved our email correspondence for future reference.

Regards,

Sale K | Customer Service Representative
