They have probably released it for field testing in the Far East, and will wait for reports before doing the rest of the world.

The firmware is not a field test one, unless Sony use actual user in HK/Taiwan as test subject.
One of the fellow wedding professional I actually know, he just have his updated in HK and shared in his facebook...and he just send it in thats it...

The update need to be performed by technician, we wouldn't be about to find anything on the support page.

I'm not happy now...just one more thing Sony pissed me off after the FE 35/1.4ZA but not A-mount 35/1.4G/ZA SSM update....

I would appreciate more words...

How did you manage to get the update done? What did they tell you are the changes? Do you experience a changed behaviour of the flash?

Thanks and greetings,

Matthias

Hi Matthias!
Is there a person to whom you should contact or should one simply use the normal contactform. Last time I wrote them, they answered "if this firmwareupdate is avaiable, download it from the F60-page at Sony.de"...
Greetings
Dirk

I attended PhotoPlus in New York yesterday and today (Thurs. and Fri.) and talked to Sony executives about the F60 firmware update. It is now available in the U.S., but Sony is not making that information widely known (I was told that officially Sony does not admit there is a problem with the flash). Rather, one has to call Sony support, indicate that they have a problem with their flash overheating, and apparently request the firmware upgrade. I was not certain whether after calling Sony support the representative would notify the caller of the firmware upgrade possibility or you have to specifically request it.

As I guess others have noted, the firmware update will lengthen the flash's recycle time, to about 7-8 seconds after a full power discharge. This is supposed to allow use of the flash without overheating the internal circuits that cause the flash to shut down.

Sony had the firmware update at PhotoPlus and could have installed it for me there, if only I had brought my flash, which I did not. Thus, I will need to contact Sony who will then tell me where to send the flash.

I'm at the show right now and I was coming here to post the same thing as Mark. They offered to upgrade the firmware when I handed my gear over for service. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. They plugged it into a programming machine and started updating it. I think they should start putting USB ports on the flash or allow the cameras to reprogram the flash.

I have it back and tested.

Recharge time until 20~25 flashes the same. After that the version 1.10 need more and more sec to recharge

Version 1.00 Overheating after 20~25 flashes

Version 1.10 no overheating even after 70~80 flashes

Version 1.00 recharge time the same until it overheats

Version 1.10 recharge time increase to 7~8 sec at 70~80 flashes as the number of flashes increase

I received my F60 flash back from Sony after getting the firmware upgrade and shot an event last Thursday with it. The flash never overheated in circumstances that I know it would have prior to the firmware upgrade. The longer recycling times for the flash following the upgrade did not present a problem except in a few situations, but I will easily take that trade-off for having a flash that does not overheat. I was using the flash with Sony's 6-AA battery pack, and NiMH batteries in the flash.

With the upgrade, the flash now seems to be a reliable unit which will work until Sony decides to come out with a more modern, state-of-the-art flash that incorporates faster recycling without overheating, radio wireless control (not just the current optical system) with no delay, and an extended focal length range for the flash up to about 200mm (the F60 goes up to 105mm), among other features.

Hi, Rex and Dirk.

Sorry for not replying - I completely missed your questions somehow...

The update won't become available for download, as users won't be able to flash the firmware without a programming adapter. That's why the flash needs to be sent to the service.

According to the information collected in Minolta-Forum, Sony's German service partner Geissler is well aware of the firmware update and will carry it out when requested to do so. I don't know, if it is a requirement to have run into over-heating issues or not (mind, that the flash might keep record of such conditions internally). At least, Gotthilf Letsche of Geissler carried out the update free of charge and without asking questions at the Alpha-Festival.

Greetings,

Matthias
