At least you can turn it off. I got frustrated with compact cameras that make the flash pop up every time you try to take a picture. Grrrr!

On my A58, autoflash puts the flash on in low light levels OR when you're shooting toward bright light, as fill-in (p42 in the manual). I expect the A77ii is similar. I normally set flash to fill-in with -2, which means it works when I put it up and doesn't otherwise.

I'm still trying to figure out why you want to operate it in auto and you also don't want it to do that ...

it seems on the A77ii you have 2 settings that do the same thing.. flash auto, and flash on...

If it's anything like the old A77 you can manually go in and turn auto flash off/on in either of the scene settings, among the first things I did with my A77 was from Gary Friedman's A77 guide...dial in scene/sports and turn the flash off.

Not that I've ever used that spot on the dial ever since.
