Just paid by paypal , set it up as friends and family , payment by UK £ to Bob in UK £ .
Used my debit card , no additional charges were made .

I agree a poll should be set up to gauge how many people would be willing to donate , and averaged across that number , including sponsors or advertising revenue etc , how much needs to be donated in total so a figure needs to be donated ( on average ) per person for the site to continue .
Obviously how much money people have to spare will vary greatly whether it's 50p or £50 it all adds up .

A running total would also be good to be visible , so it can be seen where the forums at .

Bob, IMHO one of the most popular forum models is that for a free account you get lots of adverts and you are limited to what you can do, I.e. cannot buy/sell, cannot post images, cannot access certain areas etc. For an annual “membership” fee you have a better experience without all or so many restrictions.

A good example is Grey Arrows, a UK based drone enthusiast forum who have recently moved to a membership model very successfully.

Very interesting thread. I am willing to make a donation but first I would like to get some kind of figure of an average and appropriate size of such donation related to the total cost for Dyxum.

I am a member of a club in Sweden with a very popular forum. We have three different levels for users:

1. Guest, can only read public parts of the forum, no registration
2. "Interested" registered user that can write up to 300 posts in public parts of our forum, no pictures, free of charge.
3. "Member", can write unlimited amount of posts including unlimited number of pictures etc. Pictures uploaded and stored on our own server. Access to the whole forum, annual fee of 7.50 GBP.

Today we have roughly 35 000 registered users including 16 000 paying members.

It would be interesting to know how much it would cost per paying member if Dyxum could store uploaded pictures. Today I don´t post any pictures at all as I am fed up with the hassle to upload to a different site, copy link and then go to Dyxum to paste link only to find that links are broken after a couple of years or even months. Boring to look at threads one or two years old or older with so many posts with broken links.

I understand that it all comes down to number of users willing to make donations so a poll makes sense.

My personal inclination is not to follow a subscription model - partly because I'd be concerned that we would be discouraging younger members, or those whose circumstances are not great.

I'd rather that people were able to contribute financially as and when they feel they can. Any contribution is appreciated, of whatever size, and if people are unable or do not wish to contribute financially, a contribution through posting in the forums is still valuable..

I would seriously consider a move to shared hosting - I suspect the cost would be dramatically lower. I pay about £300 a year for multiple websites, loads of databases, storage, email, backups, etc. and am looking at cheaper options. The Ad income may cover it.

glad you finally get the word out, Bob. often wondered who is paying the bills?
some one has to do it?? ;) it didn't seem fair, so I, for one, would be happy to pay a fair share. since I practically live here, Dyxum being my hangout on the WWW. (hoping for a joined effort, I'm not as rich as I 'look'? but it would def. be coming from a good heart!).

last week I had to pay for something and there were 2 options; either credit card, no fee or PayPal + an extra $2 fee.
something 'new'! waiting for 'instructions'. as I would like to make a payment to Dyxum, not PayPal.

PayPal fee when sending GBP to Dyxum seem to be 2.4%.

Transfer by Paypal, stated to family, was €2. Didn't see the %rate, maybe it depends on the amount? Anyway, it would be sad if Dyxum would stop.

Maybe it is an option to open up to other brands in a sub-section to create more traffic?

PayPal costs are complicated...

Like I said, I do not have PayPal - are there other options to contribute?

Maybe a yearly donation drive is an idea?
I doubt a "different mount cameras" section will improve the number of visitors much. A lot of photographers use Sony but most of them aren't here.....

Found the Dutch information: https://www.paypal.com/nl/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees#sending-paypal

It is €1,99 to send money to the UK from the EER. Really annoying cost structure. There are additional costs for changing currency, if you use a credit card etc. The "market" you're in makes a difference.

Regarding the unexpected currency conversions - it turned out I had the primary currency as dollars previously.

It seems to avoid paying to transfer money it could be set up with several mods collecting the payments .
Bob collecting U.K payments , a European Mod collection EU payments, and a American Mod collecting US payments.

As the bills are paid out of one pot , these mods could then just do a bank transfer into the one central account .

Sound reasonable?

Bob, I found my primary currency was USD also, something within paypal must have switched it as it was certainly GBP before. I changed it back but your setting must have forced the conversion when I made the payment.
