Dyxum was unavailable for a good bit of Sunday 8 October.

Our apologies for this, we hadn't realised that the money brought in by advertising was no longer sufficient to cover our server costs and were taken by surprise a bit more than we really should have been (our apologies for not keeping our eyes fully on the ball). Luckily, we did have sufficient monies from donations by members in previous years (along with a small contribution from the administrators) to pay the hosting fees for the next year.

We can therefore confirm that Dyxum should still be around for its 19th birthday in July 2024

Please note that, because advertising is no longer covering our server costs, we will be more reliant on member contributions in the future.

Details of how to donate can be found on the About Dyxum Page.

We would like to stress that all monies donated by members only go on genuine expenses such as the hosting fees and associated registrations.

We will also be looking to see if there are cheaper ways we can host Dyxum in future and would welcome input and ideas from the membership.

Our thanks to you all for bearing with us, and for making Dyxum the valuable resource it is.

Out of interest, what are the runnings costs of Dyxum to maintain its existence?

One website I'm on , on its home page has a box saying how much of its funding target has been met by donations .
This is separate from money from sponsorship by two firms .

Showing this information might encourage donations , I certainly have no idea what the running costs are .

I've been on here a while and visit more or less everyday , so I'll be happy to chip in to keep it going .

I guess there may be other one-offs, but the main stuff we had to cover the other week were hosting costs and licence fees for software. I'd expect all-in expenses for a typical year to be somewhere south of 2 grand.
Many years back we moved to a decicated server because traffic was high, we will be getting advice on whether there are reasonable savings to be made by going back to the shared server hosting that we had for Dyxum's early years.

Just tried PayPal, it seems to be insisting I pay in USD, is this correct? I pay my other contacts in GBP.

Not sure how it defaults, but we receive money in various currencies - I think you should be able to specify the currency from your end.

Many thanks to all those responding to this - I'm tending to contact back to acknowledge through paypal rather than our PM system as paypal doesn't show email addresses any longer, which is how I always used to match payments coming in to individual members.

Bob, my profile had defaulted to USD, I've changed it to GBP but it still insisted in converting to USD, I sent it anyway.

I tried to send money to "bob.j.dyxum@googlemail.com" for "friends and family" and PayPal is charging $4.99 for the service.
I don't remember having to pay a fee for this kind of transfer before.
Anyone else see this? Is it because it's an international transfer?

I haven't had chance to look at it yet , I tend to only use PayPal for buying online .
I've only sent money to someone twice when buying off them ( on our sales forum here , one of which was in America from England) and I thought it came up with the option of "gift" which didn't charge .
I presume that option is still there?

It didn't charge me a fee but warned me that my credit card company may charge for a cash advance, the same card I've used for years without issue. I used a debit card instead. But it reported that the money I'd sent to Bob had been converted into US dollars, I couldn't see any way to force it to use GBP. Since Bob and I are both in UK, there should be no need to convert currency.

Is there a recommended amount, say per member per month?
Typically about 95% to 99% of people will forego a service rather than pay for it.
That's how most online websites work, anyway.
It'll be interesting to see how many people would be willing to pay so a number can be reached at. Maybe host a poll to gauge interest?

Paypal is the only option to donate? Had a Paypal account for years, used it once....
