AI have both the A77M2 and the A7iii
The only E lens I have is the Tamron 17-28/2.8, all the others are A a mixture of aps-c or FF. FF only used on the A7iii, usually with the EA5 adapter although I do have the EA3 & 4. I have the Tamron 150-600G2 which I mostly use on the A7iii with the EA5. Now, the dangerous part - financially, as I have been working on a station for the summer and getting some $s in the bank I have been looking at E mount super zooms - in particular the Tamron 150-500 and the Sony 200-600. I've read and watched most of the reviews and am leaning towards the Sony - some good deals currently. Thoughts anyone, particularly for the status quo (Tammy A mount) vs going dedicated E mount. |

Do you want to be talked into buying or out of buying?
![]() I tried to find some of your pictures, but you did not share pictures the last 12 months and your Zenfolio seems no longer active. How much do you use the Tamron 150-600G2? Some food for thought. Did you consider picking up the A7m4? Especially if you're a birder, the AF might have a bigger influence - This is the experience of Aarif. It also has the advantage it will drive all your A-mount lenses with the LA-EA5 - both SSM/SAM and screw drive. You could sell the A77m2 and A7iii with full A-mount and E-mount support remaining. Apart from that, in general, native lenses are better. The 200-600 has as advantage full support on Sony cameras: higher frame rates on selected cameras and full teleconverter support. But the Tamron is a good option and might more handable (is that a word?). But then, you already checked all the reviews! Don't know if this helps. If you're happy with the results of the status quo, there is no reason at all to buy anything new. Just go out and take pictures and share them here ![]() ps before the current unpleasantness I might have said: go travelling. Edited by addy landzaat - 27 December 2021 at 08:47 |

The A77II has smaller pixels than the A7III.
The Sony G lens may have somewhat less variation than Tamron's offerings. My 200-600 G OSS is not exceptionally sharp, but it works well enough on the A7RIV. I find focus is less accurate when I use the A77II with the 70-300 G SSM II. The G2 Tamron A-mount lenses are probably 4x slower electronically than Sony SSM II lenses. But the Tamron G2 may still work well enough for you. I suppose it supports Tamron's TAP-In console for doing AF adjustments. |

Pretty much all this. For anything on E-mount, native lenses focus faster and better. Some A-mount lenses with an adapter are quite good, and even almost as good, but a native lens always has the edge. You've obviously considered the tradeoffs with the Tamron 150-500 and Sony 200-600, so it will depend on your preferences. In the end I went with the lower priced and smaller sized Tamron as I considered a max 500mm 'good enough' for my purposes. I can handhold the Tamron. I'm not sure I could with the Sony. Also, the Tamron fits in my dry cabinet and the Sony would not... OTOH, I did give up the longer reach of the Sony and the chance to use teleconverters. |

Thanks guys.
I'm pretty sure I will go with the Sony but I have to make the decision by 10Jan when the boxing Day discount ends - worth $400 smackeroonies! My main use will be wildlife and BIF and from what I read the tracking is pretty good on the A7iii - the A9 is the tops but too many organs for me to sell, and low prices for 73yr old ones ![]() Plus as you say, WP, I can also get say a 1.4 converter, although using the Tammy in aps-c mode would give about 21- - 700 Mmmm. But then one could do the same with the Sony and get about850mm?? One disadvantage for for me would be losing the superb closer focus of the Tamron. The A 150-600G2 is magic. I don't have a dry cabinet - not even a dust free caravan or car, and man can it get dusty over here which makes the Sony more attractive with no "breathing" to suck that dust in. Which is a big plus for the Sony. With my stuffed shoulders (almost bone on bone on the left one which is my support arm) I tend to use a monopod or some support a lot anyway. |

I'll throw in a third contender. What do you think of the sigma 150-600mm with E-mount? Very good specs. Fast AF and very good optics. These specs can surely compete with the tamron and sony. Price (in Holland €1399) is lower than the sony and a little bit higher than the tamron.
One negative thing about the sony 200-600mm is the heavy focus breathing at mfd at 600mm. So at mfd 600mm isn't 600mm. Good luck with your choice |

The 200-600 G OSS is very breathing corrected. That is great for video which is where the term breathing came from. You might prefer a lens that reduces its angle-of-view with closer focus. That would be focus breathing.

I'm not sure this is entirely true. I have the impression that for fast/long lenses (those with a large entrance pupil) a dedicated PDAF like that in A-mount cameras and the LA-EA4 determine the direction of misfocus more accurately and quicker than OSPDAF. However that needs to be balanced against the fact that in-lens AF motors are usually a lot quicker through the whole focus range than screw-drive. |

The build-up of GAS is pretty intense with Boxing Day extended offers and cash-back redemptions available here in Australia.
For instance, CameraPro who are based in Sydney and Brisbane, but offer free trackable shipping, list the following until 4th January. a7RivA at AU$3,820 less $500 cash back = $3,320 Sony 200-600mm G OSS at AU$2,279 less $100 cash back = $2,129 Really quite tempting... |

You have probably already bought the lens, but I’d vote for the 200-600 Sony, personally

Yes, took delivery of the SEL200600 G OSS last January and also bought an a7iv camera to drive it.
I'm delighted with this awesome combination and have posted some images in the lens data base Sony FE-200-600mm f5.6-6.3 G OSS sample images. So the gas attack has dissipated. |
