Does it make sense to get an A99 when you already have an A77II? Is the advantage of the A99 FF sensor enough to justify this, as for the rest, the A77II is a better camera IMHO.
I do have quite some FF lenses, although my current walk around lens is the DT 16-80 Zeiss, which does not make sense on the A99. I might look for a Minolta 24-105 for the A99. What a do have for full frame is a set of Minolta primes: 24 F2.8, 50 F1.7, 85 F1.4, 100 F2.8 Macro (D) , 135 F2.8 and 500 F8 Reflex. Furthermore some zooms: 70-210 F4 and 80-200 F2.8 HS APO G. |

I don’t think so. The a99 is 2 years older than the a77ii, and has older tech. It’s an expensive way to get a FF sensor that doesn’t give you any other advantages. Perhaps save up the money and wait for an a99ii instead…

I have both cameras and have to agree that the A77II is a "better" camera technically. I prefer the improved AF in the A77II for a start.
That said, I still favour the image quality from my A99 but wouldn't get rid of my A77II for a A99. The 16-80 works quite well on my A99 by the way. Agree that an A99II is the way to go, if you can find a good one. I have been trying for ages to find a good 2nd hand one ![]() Edited by ABDurbs - 29 November 2021 at 09:30 |

Hi Matt,
I went the other direction and purchased an a77II to sit alongside my a99. For me, they are different cameras serving different needs - the a77II provides excellent coverage for sports (motor racing especially) and some nature elements, whilst the a99 does seem to give slightly richer images for landscapes etc. I do, however, agree that the AF on the a77II is better than the a99 - especially for moving objects. I think if you want to go full frame, then the advice of going for the last version of the a99 - the a99ii - would be the better route as this has the last upgrades possible and would likely benefit from these over my older version. Good luck with the decision making! Take care and best regards, Neil. |

Thank you all for the info.
I came to this question because I noted an A99 being offered for 600 euro on the internet. The camera was used as a backup for an A99II and did not see a lot of usage, so the owner was selling it. It seemed a good offer to me, but was having doubts about the benefit of getting it. I realize the A77II would be the camera to use for action and macro, but the A99 could be good for portrait work (specially with lenses like the 85mm F1.4) or landscape (although I currently do not have a UW full frame lens, only the APS-C Tokina 11-16 F2.8) |

If you think you'll enjoy it and can afford it: go for it.
It will give you slightly better dynamic range and the other improvements of a bigger sensor. AF will be a step back. The price is fair, comparable to the Canon 5DIII and Nikon D810. If you want a normal zoom, I would go for a Sony as that will enable the 102 on-sensor phase detect points. Look at the 24-105 or the 28-75/2.8. I seldom use ultrawides for landscapes. But if you want an ultrawide that is comparable or better then your Tamron, you're in a tricky place. I think only the Sony/Zeiss 16-35/2.8 will qualify. Both the Minolta 17-35/2.8-4(D) and 17-35/3.5G will be a step back (though the colours of the G are great!). One thought: if you get the A99m2, you could sell the A77m2 to fund it. It will give you also a very capable 18mp APS-C camera as well as a really nice full-frame camera with a better AF-system then your A77m2 (and a better build). Just a thought. |

No, it doesn't make sense but I did it. If you really like the A77II get an A99II. And not for the reasons you might think. The a99II can share the same battery grip and It has the same AF system, essentially an A77II with a full frame sensor. The "Full Frame" experience is over rated, IMO. and the higher MP is useful only if you print really, really large high quality prints the size of bus shelters. I recently had my a99, a77, a77II, a700, OM-D EM-1 and OM-D EM-1 MkII out on a side by side battle for supremacy. I have to admit the a77II was the laggard of the bunch. ![]() Sony ILCA-77M2 + DT 55-300mm F4.5-5.6 SAM f/5.6 300.0 mm 1/3200 640 ![]() Olympus E-M1 + OLYMPUS M.75-300mm F4.8-6.7 II f/6.7 300.0 mm 1/320 1000 Edited by LAbernethy - 29 November 2021 at 13:26 |

The pictures do not show your point, Lee. Both look more then fine. The Olympus has a little more noise but that is expected at a slightly higher ISO and a smaller sensor.

That doesn't surprise me, we are rarely on the same page but it does surprise me you can tell a noise difference on these downsized images, I can't tell a noise difference on the Originals at 100%, if anything the 4/3rds image is cleaner to my eye. The point was the plain of focus. These are very small birds. The Minolta AF 85mm 1.4 is just fine on the a77II. The plain of focus is the same and razor thin, The angle of view is just a little different. Edited by LAbernethy - 29 November 2021 at 17:06 |

You did not say you were talking of the plane of focus. Both are on the eye it seems. The Olympus has more DoF - it is f/6.7 versus the f/5.6 for the Sony, so, that makes sense.
It is possible the noise seems more noticeable to me on the Olympus then on the Sony because of the different backgrounds. I don't know. |
