In 2010, Christchurch City was rocked by a huge earthquake. There had been no earthquakes in Christchurch in living memory. That quake did a lot of damage, cracking old buildings and placing the city on warning.
In 2011, another big quake brought down most of those damaged buildings and many more that hadn't been noted as damaged: 185 people died and the city centre was utterly destroyed: a 30 billion dollar rebuild began. Out of the ruins came a graffiti movement backed and even financed by the city council and government to create some beauty. As an ex citizen of Christchurch, I traveled there to document the city and spent 3 days walking the streets mainly shooting the ruins and the graffiti. I called my series "Beauty Among the Ruins" Here are three images from that series: 1. Nice series Michael, and an interesting story how street art can help in the mourning and rebuild effort. I especially like the first since it provides most context, only you need to clone out some dust spots in the sky (and after that give your sensor a good clean).

Yeah, I merely linked that from my Flickr pages and didn't edit. Shooting mountain bike racing is very hazardous to a digital camera; constantly changing lenses in a dusty, dirty, damp environment means a dirty sensor is unavoidable. I had to clean my A900 many times and bought some expensive tools to do so (motorised anti static brush etc). In the end though, I sent it in for pro cleaning. Same with my A7R. That got even dirtier probably because of the shallower depth to the sensor compared to the A900. Water (rain and mist) more easily combined with dust on the sensor. By the time I'd sent that away to be professionally cleaned, I'd shot 5 years of mountain bike racing as well as motocross and had changed lenses so many times! The company told me it was the dirtiest sensor they have ever had to clean with really stubborn dirt clinging tight. Again, dirt, grime and moisture while changing lenses. It's not expensive really but it is inconvenient. |

Ahh! I cld see it was ab Asian boy in the image and it felt familiar (the door and sense of abandonment). I lived in Malaya as a child and then Singapore as an adult but actually never got to Penang. I know the southern Malaysian mainland better than the northern. My brother was born in Taiping. |
