Nice photo's of this important custom!

Here in Belgium people pay tribute to their passed family members and loved ones on Nov 1, "All Saints Day" which is a public holiday. Everybody knows that this originally happened on Nov 2 "All Souls Day", but since that is not a public holiday the visiting/cleaning/decorating graves shifted to a day earlier.
You can see the April Foolishness 2023 exhibition here Another great show of the talent we have on Dyxum

quite unique across the world I believe - people visiting cemeteries to pray for their souls, pay tribute, etc.

Actually i like the idea a lot. People should do this more around the world.
It is quite common. All souls day is observed in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. Famous is the Mexican Día de los Muertos interpretation. Some Dutch protestant churches observe the "Eeuwigheidszondag" (eternity Sunday) in 2022 on 20 November. There are local differences, but it is not unique.

True, true. What I meant however is that massive visiting of graveyards is not as common. Actually, as Pieter wrote: the "stress" is moved towards All Saints Day as it is bank holiday in PL as well. This year it was a bit "relaxed" because a lot of people made a long weekend and started visiting cemeteries on Saturday. Usually it's really crowded there. The only day where there are more alive than dead in the cemetery
I'm noise-blind. And noise-about-noise-deaf too ... |   BTW, Dyxum Weekly Exhibitions don't grow on trees ...

It felt a bit strange to find this grave in Arlington National Cemetery.

This is the non-segregated 'Section 27' of Arlington cemetery. Section 27 is where the oldest graves are (dating from the time of the Civil War). There is very little recorded about this Robert Janes. It would seem that 'Citizen' and 'Civilian' were used as euphemisms for freed slaves.

This brings the less than entirely comfortable possibility that Robert took his surname from a slave-owner. However I did find a reference to an abolitionist from Conneticut who was active in the 1850s with the surname Janes, who might have been Robert's namesake.

I was pleased to be able to visit and pay my respects.

I found rudimentary information, if this person were a slave he would have been a child slave, presumably he would have been "freed" as a teenager, unless his particular location did not obey the law

Section 27 is eye-opening reading.
