I have a battery grip for the Sony a9ii that I'm looking to sell. Someone asked me if it was grey market or USA and...I wasn't sure.

But now I noticed that it says:

SONY CORP.
EU Importer: Sony Europe B.V.

Does that mean it's grey market in the USA? I just want to be up front about it since someone asked.

I don't know, but I doubt it is relevant. First read this thread: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1754105

Now on the sticker saying "EU Importer: Sony Europe BV"
My cameras (incl. A6400 and A7r4) do not have this sticker, recent lenses do, including my 11/1.8, 20/1.8G and 70-200/4G.
The 11/1.8 was interesting as it mentioned both the EU importer and the UK importer.

I am quite sure the sticker is there to comply with EU law. But is might be easier for Sony to simply apply the sticker on all products because that might be cheaper.

So, imho the sticker with "EU Importer: Sony Europe B.V." is an indication it might be grey import to the US, but is no proof.

Oh yeah 100% I feel like it's not relevant in any way. It's used anyway so there's no warranty. And likely most people wouldn't bother repairing a $300 battery grip and would just buy another one if it died.

But I got asked and so started to wonder if there was a way to tell in case people REALLY cared.

I did try to reach out to Sony and all they would give me was "was it purchased from one of these retailers?" And while it WAS purchased from Adorama (with the a9ii it was attached to) it was used to start with so who knows? A friend purchased it from them as a combined package (the battery door had been lost from the a9ii so it was sold with the grip attached -- I ended up replacing the battery door).

The honest answer to give is that you simply don't know.

Which was 100% what I said. But I wasn't sure if there was some way to tell or not.

No way to tell for certain. Any manufacturer is going to want to swap stock around to fit demand. I've heard of various situations in which serial number ranges reserved for certain markets get reassigned.

It seems to be the US distributors that get most worked up about grey imports. I get the impression it is not a huge issue elsewhere.
