In last couple years the pandemic cancelled big public events, but last week Helsinki Samba Carnaval returned more or less in its full glory and the event highlight was obviously the parade in Saturday. Since it is free and public event and the weather was warm and sunny, I obviously went to see (and photograph) it. I did return with over 1700 shots, but I obviously will show here only a fraction of that and actually only some of the 130 better(?) images I placed on my online gallery.

Before the parade there was some program on a stage at Senate Square.

1. Some VIPs on stage: on left the Brazilian ambassador to Finland, behind the microphone Helsinki mayor Juhana Vartiainen

2. Flag of Association of Samba Schools in Finland

3. Final touches on the makeup

Now, let's begin parading...

4. Rainhas do Carnaval, actress and influenser Kerttu Rissanen and artist Sini Sabotage

5. G.R.E.S. Imperio do Papagaio from Helsinki was first and their this year's theme was "Amazon - Green Eldorado of tales"

6. Float:

7. Rainha de Bateria (and the Bateria on the left)

8. Destaque

9. Capoeira group paraded between Samba Schools

G.R.E.S Uniao da Roseira from Tampere had theme "Our living forests"

10. COMISSAO: Pine trees and Ural owl

11. Deer

12. Baterian kuningatar (yep, Queen of Bateria in Finnish)

13. G.R.E.S. Samba Tropical from Seinšjoki: "On curiosity in space"

14. Sambista

15. Tune of their enredo

16. Float: The Capital of Space

17. G.R.E.S. Carioca from Turku: "Carioca parties - 35th anniversary parade"

18. Legs up!

19. Porta Bandeira

20. Musicians

21. Small group (~Bateria) from German Uniao do Samba

22. G.R.E.S. Samba Maracana from Lahti didn't have special theme this year

23. Old and young

24. G.R.E.S. Samba el Gambo from Kokkola

25. "Samppa of the Night" (the theme was "Lights of a harbour town - Encounters in a longshoreman's day" and the lead character of the story was longshoreman called Samppa)

26. Samba Sao Miquel from Sweden

27. G.R.E.S. ForÁa Natural

28. Samba dancer

29. And as final group: Dance school SAMBIC

30. Time to sit down on a restaurant terrace and check the messages

My weapons of choice for capturing this event was α7R III + Sony FE 4/24-105 G and α1 + Tamron 70-180 mm F/2.8, EXIFs should be intact if somebody is interested in the gory details. Some of the pictures have been more or less heavily cropped.

Thanks for looking!

I doubt whether we could get a samba festival of this magnitude (well photographed Heikki) in Holland.
Then again, Iím not a Samba-expert and we do have a yearly carnaval Brazil .
Iím always impressed by the efforts that are put into this kind of events (that includes your photography)
A colorful set Heikki, TFS

I had to do some searching and eg. Rotterdam Zomercarnaval looks quite big event to me, perhaps even bigger than this event in Helsinki if I interpret the website information correctly. But I am not that big expert on samba and carnivals either.

Yeah, the efforts needed to make all those costumes, songs and choreography etc. must be admired. My efforts to capture the scene was more modest, just get to the location and point my cameras towards performers...
