THNX for you replies here. This image was taken in 2017. While working on some photobooks I keep 'finding' some gems on my HDD

Every year, in early summer, the stallions of Austria migrate to their mountain summerpastures. The group has to pick it's leader and this traditional 'Hengstauftrieb' in the region of Salzburgerland is held in the Raurisertal. Ten stallions at the time are battling it out under safe conditions in the upper valley. It really was a privilege to experience this event two years in a row. The pictures are of 2018, all made with the Sony A77 i.c.w. the Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 "Bigma" lens.

Some folklore first.... the 'Schnalzergruppe' whipping and regional beer sold to the audience, ten o'clock in the morning!

The stallions are presented and full of adrelanine

Full of energy, weight over 700 kg!

In the end... friends forever!

And in the evening we watched the news on TV thanks to these cameramen:

It was a special day during our vacation in Austria....

I've never heard from that tradition before but your pictures look stunning! I think I have to visit this event too, next chance is in June as I have seen.

TFS!

Spent four days from June 6, 2019 to June 9, 2019 at the horse shows/cmpetitions at Strömsholms Castle in Sweden.
It was great and first time ever for me at such event/competitions.
I wasn’t allowed into the arenas as the press-teams where so it was hard to get the right spots and angles.
About 9550 shots, phew…

Day One is ready, started on day Two…

Two samples:

7R304784 by Lars Hernborg, on Flickr

Album day 1
Album day 2:

Warning! Lots of images and a lot lot more to come…

Gear mostly used: a7RIII /w 135/1.8 100-400 GM, last day I tried out with the 70-200 f4 but it can’t keep up sadly enough as I needed go down to around 70mm many times.
Some movies with my iPhone and the Vuze XR 2d/3D camera. Movies are in Day one, and last in that album, only short ones, mostly a few minutes.

9550 you said? That's a lot indeed!
Some very good shots in the albums, but, to be honest, probably also some that you would not have kept if it wasn't your first horse event ;-)
(those where the horses have a less flattering pose). Nevertheless a joy to watch. The details of the 7Riii are amazing.

Thanks.
Yea probably but I keep a lot more than I usually do for the contenders so they can choose for themself what to download :-)

The "less flattering pose", can you tell me a few so I know what to lookout for? :-)

Oh. I think I know what you mean... all the butts?

Well, Sony has four AF modes, the old subject Tracking AF, The face and Eye-AF, the new animal Eye-AF and the latest Butt-AF

All those butts indeed Lars, although the butt-AF seems to work extremely well in continuous mode .
In general the more stretched poses are much better appreciated (eg. ...2940 and ...2949 from the first album). Usually landings are less flattering (although I understand you are presenting a sequel of the jump) and the ones where the horse is more wrapped up to a compact block (e.g. ...3654) would normally fall of IMHO.

3259 is not flattering, but a well captured moment

Thanks a lot for some great tips, much appreciated!
Don't know much at about this at all, as a total novice I shot everything :-)
You are actually the first to say anything and so with tips as well, will try to remember those
