Well, I was out early Sunday evening getting some seascape shots at Muriwai, also famous for its gannets, when there was a terrible splat sound.

Gannet droppings applied at velocity to the camera, soaking into the buttons and dials. I was unamused. I'm equipped to deal with sand and sea spray but not guano.

So, long story short, I returned up, cleaned out everything with brushes and copious amounts of Iso-Propyl Alcohol. No idea of any lasting damage yet.

So, is this a common hazard to your photography?

Wouldn't call it common but it is indeed a hazard and I've learnt the hard way to check trees along waterways for birds before take up a shooting position underneath.

Oh my, that cormorant did a good job on your lens.
So far the camera seems to be working. I was lavish in my use of IPA... perhaps there is a lesson there
