Hi every1:
I just past the magic 9999 file number on my camera and got badly surprised. Camera created new folder and started to name files starting with 0001. I already have files with these numbers and I am afraid that pictures taken earlier but having same number can be replaced automatically by newer ones in my computer.
I was searching the Web looking for solution for it but it looks like Sony have pissed customers off do not fixing firmware.
I am curious how is in your cases guys? Do the newer cameras have counter set to five digits or you have same problem? How to resolve this problem?

The 4 digit file number thing is actually a camera industry standard (CIPA DCF). It is based on the old 8 character limit for FAT filename entries.

On newer cameras Sony lets you set the four characters before the number. I don't think that was an option on the A7II. It sounds like some manufacturers do count with some of the other characters.

Sorry to say, but there's nothing to be fixed here in FW. It's according to the CIPA DCF standard, thus not a bug, but a feature

It's a restrictive part of the CIPA DCF standard that only the last four digits are used for sequential file numbering. Hence you're starting from scratch again after 9999 shots and the only way to keep the images consecutively numbered is to rename them once transferred to the computer.

As far as I know all cameras use this standardized image naming scheme (the letters may be different and newer Sony cameras allow you to change these) with four digits. If there is fifth number (0) that is merely a padding for sRGB images (if you set camera to use AdobeRGB then filename pattern omits the zero and starts with an underscore).

Now, regarding solutions to cope with the similarly numbered files: I think there is two alternatives: rename files (some OSs may offer this automatically) if there is duplicate or divide files into multiple directories. My favourite approach is the latter, in form of date specific directories. Sony cameras do already offer half ready solution in its settings (you can select date or standard folder naming), albeit in the date form, the first three numbers of the year are replaced with index numbers (first folder 100, second 101 and so on). But I am using fairly simple Perl script to take care of renaming those three numbers and copy all images into date specific directiories on my computer, thus problems would only appear if there is more than 10000 image files for a single day, but I have never taken that many photos on one day.

The A7ii lets you change the first three characters of the filename, so if you change those every time you pass 9999 you'll never have any duplicate file names.

Other option is to store them in different (year or year/month) directories on your computer, then duplicate names are not a big problem (unless you shoot more than 9999 images in the period you select for that directory.

The option I use is to rename all files upon import by adding the date (YYYYMMDD format) at the end, that will also ensure you never have any duplicate filenames.

I do use the bulk rename utility to change the standard file name to a unique one.
I also store them in maps, based on a yyyymm-name.

Thank to all of you for immediate response. I didn't know that they set a standard on file numbering. Well, I will need to live with this.
Have to think yet what to do, how to prevent file from erasing.
But I got at least a few solutions from you and I have to choose best one working for me.

Try to figure out a workflow with your pictures that Will work.
Don't put all files in Just one map.

I can recommend Bulk Rename Utilty to change the first 4 positions of your filenames from DSC0 into whatever you like in case your camera doesn't support this setting.
I am using this for years to make my files body specific and specific for each pass of 9999.

It might be worth mentioning that Lightroom offers a belt and braces option: file renaming on import as well as the ability to sort imported files into folders organised by date.

I import into new folders each time so duplicate file numbers wouldn't cause me an issue if it happened to me. I did notice my A77 did this when t passed 9999.

I simply begun adding "1" in a front of file number in my computer. Now I have files looking like XXXX1XXXX.I hope it will work.
