Having worked my way through minolta to A77ii and A99 I bought an A7 and hated it. As a nature and sports guy Nikon made more sense. Big affordable lenses were within reach so off I went. My interests have moved back towards portraiture and so I'm coming back. Watching friends with their eye AF and not fancying the cost of the Z mount, I've ordered an A7riii. It's a grey import but I'm fine with that - it's the same price as secondhand and its the A version so has a better screen. I've also ordered an 85 1.8 and 50 1.8 (both second hand) and am really looking forward to using all the new tricks 😊

Welcome back
![]() Surely if you've been shooting what you like you've not missed much ![]() The 1.8/85 makes for great portrait lens, big bang for buck lens. One thing that could be of intrest, the different adapters availible for the A7/9/1 system that allows vintage lenses the be used with Eye AF. It's has some trade-off compaired to native AF, but all in all it works for me if Eye-AF is needed. Looking forward to some of you work shared on Dyxum. Greetings |

It's good to see a familiar name return. Welcome back.
I really like the A7Riii for portraiture and what really helps is the speedy and accurate Eye AF. I'm not familiar with those lenses, but the 85/1.8 gets quite good reviews. It's a good focal length and distance for portraits. The new battery is also so much better than the old NP-FW50 in the original 7 series. |

Thanks everyone. Onsplekie I've been looking at the options for Nikon to Sony and they seem very limited. I have the 135 DC f2 which is a thing of beauty (perhaps flawed on giant sensors where the ca shows up) but when it hits the sweet spot wide open it's glorious. I'm tempted to hang onto it in the hope an eye AF compatible adapter arrived. Having seen the metabones adapters working it's a shame I didn't go to Canon. 😊

I breifly stepped over to the Nikon with the D200 but I didn't get on with it and went back to my KM/Sony's.

It’s funny. Now Sony beats Nikon in every area of photography. Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side😂

Evf of Sony blows the z9 out of the water. Evf is second costliest part of the camera. Likely where the orice difference lies. Also in high FPS z9 only shoots jpeg. As a wildlife/aviation shooter I need raw for the post processing latitude. While a good entry for sure the z falls to short for me. Let alone the lack of native lenses. That cheap 200-600 is a true game changer for Sony.

Sony downrezes the feed to their EVFs. Nikon specified they are not doing that on the Z9. I am not reviewing images in the EVF and that seems to be the only time you get full resolution with recent Sony EVFs.
I know Olympus keeps using LCD EVFs because they have less lag. Viewfinder marketing specifications are often misleading especially when they are mutually exclusive. Edited by QuietOC - 29 October 2021 at 16:03 |

Olympus has left the camera business, so they will definitely not keep doing it |
