Some great news !!

**********************
First of all; this isn't something everyone should mess with, it's very easy to make your camera not working anymore.
**********************
This is only for those who really understand what they are doing and that are prepared to test the whole thing.
**********************
Once again, DON'T play with this if you aren't sure what are you doing !!

Responsibility for any fault this may produce on your camera is just yours.

**********************
Second, I take full responsibility of publishing this. I have stated several times that while dyxum isn't a place for sharing any piracy, the way KM has left their customers (with bad support and many unanswered questions) has forced us to find alternative ways of repairing our cameras. I have two 7D and one of them is two years old. In these two years it has been sent to service several times with very long return dates; two years of owing it and more that 6 months !! spent in service .. absolutely unacceptable IMHO.

Now, that I made this clear I can bring you a great news . Those who have read 7D and 5D service repair guide may have noticed that for some adjustment a special program was required: "2186 adjustment program"

I have exchanged many mails with various sources but I didn't find this utility .. until now (Thanks to Alexander).

I've been informed by the person who has sent me this that he has found an online store and purchased this

http://sony.nexttronicsparts.com/2186-ADJUSTMENT-PROGRAM-CD-VER-Sony-Part-Number%20-U3700799U-or-U-3700-799-U--387551.htm

the price was 0$ and he has paid only the shipping. No license was provided, no copyright, no nothing ! Weird? Yes it is, but it's more important that this software is finally available since we may actually see it of great use.

Installing and using this program is described in 7D and especially in 5D "2186 Service Manual Repair Guide".

I didn't tried any adjustment myself (yet), but I did tested if I can connect this software to my 7D; and it worked just fine :)

Now, please .. I would really like if this thread can be used to share experiences with this software. The whole thing is in the first place for those of you who may be knowledgeable and brave enough to use this software.

I guess the first thing to share is what exactly this software can do. Here is a list of adjustments possible and I would like if someone can give us explanations of those (I do now something but I would rather see more knowledgeable person having this explained)

(this program has different capabilities with 5D and 7D. I didn't have the time to study it at all at this moment but here the list from repair manuals)
from 5D repair manual

- PRETRIGGER
- PI-PR
- AE
- FREQUENCY
- CCD GAIN
- SERVO
- DEFECT PIXEL
- GYRO
- WB
- VSUB
- SHAKE GAIN
- AORI & CENTER
- FLASH LEVEL
- SS
- DESTINATION
- AF (AREA , PITCH / YAW)
- FLATNESS
- EZ

from 7D repair manual

Adjustment of CCD Vsub voltage
Adjustment of CCD center position
Adjustment of CCD perspective
Adjustment of camera shaking actuater
Adjustment of the servo for camera shaking
Adjustment of the gyro for camera shaking
Adjustment of the AE
Sensitivity adjustment
Adjustment of the defective pixel
Adjustment of white balance
Adjustment of camera shaking compensation
*Peform adjustment of CCD center position and adjustment of CCD perspective (P. 52) without BACK
COVER ASSY, after disassembling from step 1 to step 4 in P.4.

I will moderate this thread and if and when necessary I may format info collected in a separate page for easier reading and understanding.

There is a dedicated discussion in Russian at http://forum.ixbt.com/0020/021080.html

Also, i need to point you to http://Dynax.newmail.ru; web page of the person who has found this program.

I'm aware that many dyxum non-members will read this and the whole thing will be discussed on other forums as well. But, i would really appreciate to see any new findings or info to be forwarded here too. For a benefit to all 7D / 5D owners it is VERY important to share this knowledge.

This has been published in a good faith to be helpful to all of us !

********************start of suggestions about the program ****

- 7D and 5D repair manuals do mention different software; "2186 adjustment program" in case of 5D and "2181 adjustment program". At the moment it is my believe that this is the same software since the one we have access now have listed both cameras (and few others)

- be sure to follow instruction given in the 5D repair manual on how to install the program
- you need to turn your camera on in adjustment mode to be able to use this software. Please see mentioned manuals for details.
With the camera turned OFF press and hold the following button (you need to hold these pressed at the same time !)

- set your camera in M (manual) mode
- up controller key
- menu button
- half press the shutter

Again, while keeping pressed all buttons mentioned tutn the camera on.

- You may already have installed drivers for your 7D /5D but when turning your camera in "adjustment mode" windows may ask you to install new drivers (Dimage camera). If so, these drivers are located in usb2.0 folder of the downloaded program file

We were forced to remove links to this utility. If you need it, ask for it and i'm sure someone in this community will be able to help you :)

Hi!
I must add information about program (sorry for my English :) )
I think that “2186 adjustment program” works with different types of camera
2186 - Dynax 5D
2181 - Dynax 7D
2730 - Dimage X21
2733 - Dimage Z3
2742 - Dimage X31
2800 - Dimage Z5
2806 - Dimage Z6
For 7D and 5D we have DLLs. I don't know, but program may be works with other cameras without DLLs.

After pressing “start” button you can see error message, because driver install files are not correct, you must copy file “uusbd.dll” into System32 directory (C:\windows\system32\) manually.

I'm curious about how the software will deal with the AF adjustment and flatness (?) for FF/BF adjustment. Mladen you're a saint for providing this.

Yep, two of the most interesting adjustments certainly are flash and AF adjustments.
I'm pretty much sure that with time we will collect enough info and experiences to provide a "safe" guide on how to use these.

In file "2186 Service Manual Repair Guide.pdf", page 51. Function "EZ Shift". I have no free time now, but I will try to do this tomorrow.
I didn't find such function for 7D, only for 5D

Roof is right, options for 7D are quite different than for 7D.
Here is a print screen with my 7D connected

In "2186 Service Manual Repair Guide" (for 5D) at page 58, we can read:
The following items can be read out and cleared:

SHOOT (number of shutter-release)

FLASH (number of flash fired)

But in the 7D service manual I didn't find such think :(

Thank you Mladen and Alexander :D

If you read the manual you will find there is other equipment required for calibration as well and that physical adjustment is also required. The program alone is interesting and useful but it is unlikely that problems will be solved with this software alone.

Is anyone aware of the flash procedure. Can the firmware be downloaded and restored?

Good find btw, thank you.

The service center selling this has 13,192 pages of Sony parts available - with about a dozen entries for each page viewed - so finding it must have been next to impossible. In there, I'll bet there is an A100 adjustment program and all the other utilities needed - as well as many parts for the cameras, items such as additional focus screen shims, tools for opening, cable for connecting PC for diagnostics, maybe even the entire test bench assembly and test targets and light sources.

To adjust the cameras properly, you do need these other items. Using the program without have them, you are guessing by entering numbers whose default values and effects you don't know (though the repair manuals do offer some insight).

Very useful. I have downloaded the utility of course but won't be using it in a hurry!

Absolutely, there isn't any reason to rush with anything.
I believe soon or later we will collect enough knowledge for at least some adjustments (i will certainly try the flash exposure tweak since this is currently my biggest issue that i may be able to resolve myself).
What i did find interesting so far is that 7D and 5D are so much different; at least comparing 5D service manual with the options i have when connecting my 7D.
I was hopping that we may get number of total actuations but i didn't find it so far (i didn't find camera log button as indicated on 5D repair manual).
Also, would be very interesting to compare various values each of us is getting in "version" field; this may (and may not) include production date or revision number etc.
