For those of guys in the USA. Did you have to contact SONY to arrange for the repair or is it possible to contact Precision Camera directly with this issue?

A couple months ago I called Sony about a FBF issue with a 5D I have. They said no more (free) repairs from them. Then I called Precision and they said to send it in to them. I did not tell them about Sony. I had it repaired at no cost within three weeks (I had to wait for parts) and it works great now.

I sent an FFB afflicted 5D to Precision a month ago and got it back in tip-top shape about two weeks later, it cost me shipping to CT only. Via their online chat service I had asked them before sending it off if they knew anything about Sony quitting on the FFB free repair program at the end of this year. The guy at the other end responded he hadn't heard anything about that and said their free FFB repair program was still active (QED when I got the 5D back).

To the Dutch members:

My 7D is suffering from First Frame Black issues and now I though of getting it repaired so I contacted Sony. They have a service partner called FRS in Almere who does this and so I called them.

The women indeed confirmed that the repair was for free but only until December this year. However the repair would take about 6 to 8 weeks. I've seen a lot of mails coming by stating repair times of around 1,5 weeks. Anybody has experience with FRS and there repair times. Missing my body for a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks is a long time certainly when knowing I have a trip to China coming up end of November.

I don't know about FRS but in Canada it took more than 1.5 weeks for the repair. I can't remember how exactly long it took but I am thinking it was about 4 weeks.

I would be sure to get it done as soon as possible if I were you.

I have now been informed that the parts have finally arrived and that my son's 7D will be shipped back to us this week.

They also confirmed that the free repairs (at least in the UK) will end on 31 December 2010.

Got the 7D back from Precision yesterday - 2 months to the day from when I sent it off.

There was a series of frustrating "administrative issues", which were ultimately resolved thanks to Mark Soares, but the ffb problem has been repaired under the advisory and the camera appears to be working fine again. Will give it a more thorough testing on the weekend.

* sigh * - looks like I may have celebrated too soon.

No more FFB, but there seems to be a backfocus issue now...

FFB IS fixable (if that is the problem you have)- it is just that some country's distributors have stopped or are reluctant to offer the free fix.

Other Canadian members have shipped their cameras to the US to take advantage of the free fix which most acknowledge will end on 31 December 2010.

Ahoy!

I've just sent a message to Johnson's regarding the FFB issue, and this the their reply verbatim:

Dear Sir,

In response to your email:- yes we are still carrying out repairs of the Minolta 7D first frame blank problem, but this repair is no longer covered under the SONY call back warranty. The cost of the repair would be the standard charge fee of £120+VAT.

If you wish to send the camera to us for repair, send it for the attention of the service department along with a covering letter stating the fault to the address below and we will carry out the repair for you.

Many Thanks
