Show us... islands of the world

Dyxumers come from all walks of life and from all corners of the globe- sharing a common interest in enjoyment of photos taken with Alpha mount cameras. This thread is created as a landing page where we can coordinate and update new islands added by other Dyxumers.

Want to show the island near where you live, or where you live on, or where you've been- then please choose pictures from your chosen island and either upload to an existing location thread, or if your location is not shown then start as a new thread 'Islands: place-name' by creating a new topic under this link.

Please do not post pictures to this thread, but add a message to it giving a link to a new island thread created by you, and we will try to add your location and link to a summary of locations on this first post of thread.

Please also copy the text and link from 2nd post in this thread when starting a new location thread. This will help link back to this page to find other locations- and to keep the other threads following a consistent theme.

Click 'quote' and copy this text over for opening text when adding a new city. Thanks.

Show us... your island, your country

Show us islands of the world is your chance to show the island near where you live, or where you live on, or where you've been- then please choose pictures from your chosen island and either upload to an existing location thread, or if your location is not shown then start as a new thread. The usual Dyxum content rules apply- but to assist fellow Dyxumers inspired to visit locations that are shown, please indicate where in/on your island the photos were taken.

This thread is open for C&C and for posting additional pictures. Please ONLY post pictures taken at the island indicated- or start a new thread.

If you wish to start a new location thread- please click 'quote' to this opening post, and copy the contents as opening text to your new thread 'show us place-name. Also post a message to the link at start of text- where we can add your location to a master list of hyperlinked locations.

If you have already posted images that have been dedicated to a single island it might be possible to enter them into the index as well.
In such a case please use the edit function to insert the header text which you can find in the previous post at the top of the first post in the thread that you have created in the past. You should also change the topic into the format: "Island: name, country". Then post the link to this thread next to this post.

You might have a look at the thread on “Bornholm, Denmark” to learn how this should look like.

Just in case the topic of "islands" needs clarification: Islands can be found in the seas, in lakes, in rivers. They can be small - like Roosevelt Island, they can be big - like Vancouver Island or Nova Scotia. Although it's often related to by this name, the "British Isle" or, to give another example, "Ireland" would stretch the notion of island too far (although we would entertain arguments about that).

So no pictures of islands as seen from the surroundings?

Any images of islands are allowed, of course - the perspective from the surroundings would be welcomed! I very much hope you that you start a thread of Suomenlina, Heiki!

I was wondering about the definition of Island as technically, I live on one already (the North Island of NZ aka Te Ika-a Māui).

Perhaps something we can drive or sail around inside a day.

Good question, maybe the easiest is to set some kind of area limit.

Harald mentions Nova Scotia as a genuine island, which is ~55.000 sq km.

Newfoundland is ~109.000 sq km and the two New Zealand islands are ~113.000 (north) and ~150.000 (south) sq km, those would probably be borderline but that's really up to Harald.

He also mentions the "British Isle", as probably too big for this thread, so with that ~209.000 sq km. would be above the limit.

My proposal would be to make a cut at 80,000 sq km.

Following the Wikipedia list this would exclude Ireland, Iceland, Cuba, the Philippine islands Luzon and Mindanao, several Canadian islands (Newfoundland, Ellesmere Island, Victoria Island, Baffin Island), several Indonesian islands, Honshu (Japan), Madagascar, the North and South Island of New Zealand.
But it would include Hispaniola, Sri Lanka, Tasmania, Taiwan - to give some examples of "larger" islands with an area less than 80,000 sq km.

For those in doubt consulting the Wikipedia list would be the easiest way to check the admissibility of their posts. However, I could imagine to admit islands exceeding that limit if their population is extremely sparse (e.g. Baffin Island, 507,000 sq km with a population of 13,000) - a kind of "remoteness bonus".
