1. A Microdear lens cleaning cloth (world's best; sold in Japan but Adorama carries it), in a good-condition ziploc bag that had been degreased with alcohol. I'd never gotten comfortable with the lenspen and disposable cleaning papers.

2. Kodak lens cleaning fluid.

3. An extra rear lens cap - helps in changing lenses

4. A small LED flashlight

5. A nickel, for tripod plate screw

6. A spare battery

7. A small Moleskine notebook and a mini pen

A potted history of Minolta to give to the snotties when thay ask - "Minolta - what's that ?"

Seriously ( in addition to the usual spares etc.):-

Lenspen - do check the surface out regularly to make sure there is no grit still attached
The Pod
Small penlight
Camera Rain-coat
Filter wallet - holds 6
Filter wrench
Pen & pad

AND - small white sticky labels ( ??? )
I shot some film yesterday. I was told last night that film was dead so today I shot some more.

I keep a 'Rite in the Rain' waterproof notebook in my bag to scribble notes about my photos while I'm shooting along with a pen with waterproof ink. Not that I do a lot of shooting in the rain, but if it starts raining, I'm so busy getting my equipment out of harms way that my notebook is my last priority. I had a few ruined notepads after quick afternoon thunderstorms before I finally discovered these cool little waterproof ones.

I am looking forward to my Sony A700 in a few days. I also ordered an accessory Sony "Magnifier" FDA-M1AM for $67.99, (after 15% Sony accessory discount) It fits over the viewfinder like a angle finder but is straight on. It has a diopter adjustment independent of the camera. It gives about 2.3 times the view for more accurate focus. Users need to realize the image will cover an area larger than seen. It's like looking at a zoom or crop. Certainly it will improve macro work but I am looking forward to other hard to capture shots like the attached.

I just missed this shot of a very skittish zoo bird That I may have nailed if the Sony Magnifier works as well as I expect with narrow depth of field as in this f/2.8 Sigma 90mm shot:

Does anyone have any experience with Hama lenspad? How it performs compared to original Lenspad? Or should I be aware of it?!

I have one - it seems to work, but I can't compare it to the original since I've never tried one.

Similarly; I carry with me a decent pair of climbing gloves; warm yet thin, black, with a good grip on the inside.

Of course there are also the LowePro Photo Gloves but I like my climbing ones :o)

Not really a cheap extra but I've just bought an Olympus Mju770SW for where I daren't take my cameras. It's waterproof, drop proof, crush-proof and has reasonable IQ.

I was originally looking for an underwater housing for my a700 or D7's but, let's face it, I wouldn't dare use it. The Olympus, however, can be thrown into the sea, rolled in the sand, stood on, washed under running water and left out to dry. For holiday photos of coral reef animals etc, it's going to get some serious use - starting in Curacao over Christmas.

I daren't normally take a decent camera to the beach - and when I do I'm way too careful to enjoy myself, so this tiny toy will be a breath of fresh air.

Not sure about lens cap retaining cords - but I made a level for my camera. Works a treat...

Spare hot shoe cover,
cheap generic bubble level,
epoxy 2 part resin,
another level,
vice.

Popped the cheap hot shoe level into the vice, set it level.
Dab of 5 minute epoxy onto the mount plate. Apply the upside-down spare hotshoe cover. Used another level to apply pressure to the hotshoe cap (and keep it level) and then stood there like an idiot for 5 minutes. I then used some more epoxy to strengthen it up.

With hindsight, I should have drilled a hole or two through the cover to allow the glue to get to the inside of the cover - but it might not be necessary.

Here are a few things I keep with me:

1. iPod (real cheap one- holds about 70 songs)
2. Survival knife which has waterproof matches, fishing line and hook and compass inside- I only take this when I'm going hiking/camping
3. Survival blanket (the shiny metal looking one) they fold up real small- again, I only take it when hiking/camping
4. LCD cleaner/cover (plastic static sheet style)
5. Med kit/ snake bite kit
6. 2 large plastic zip loc bags
