In case of April Fools and Octoberfest, my excuse to not participate is the fact that you are supposed to use only one (or these days two) lenses and since one of my favourite photo subjects is birds and for those you usually want to use long telephoto lenses and since these are prime challenges and I don't have any such primes, I find it hard to participate and more or less ignore one of my major interests for a month (especially as April and October are time of year with significant bird migration). July challenges I have participated and since often it is more about themes than specific lenses and that is much easier. Although, even with those challenges, it can still be somewhat laborious if aiming for a picture a day.

That is why I opt for 7/week - it is within the objective without being to restrictive. Especially when trying to balance photography with work and live.

Re. the primes focused character of challenges, something like an alphabet (or colour, or music, or any subject) challenge is not focal length dependant. You could do an alphabet challenge with birds if you want to.

Several people showed interest in a macro challenge, I would opt for a MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) challenge as not everybody will have a macro lens. Until a year ago my closest focusing lens was an 1:2 Sigma 180/5.6. And I bought it for its focal length, not its 1:2 macro.

Some other ideas:
Week 35 - fits both crop and full frame
Rainbow - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet
Alphabet month - 26 pictures representing 26 letters

I want to do a year long challenge, but the 150 one doesn't inspire me. Still undecided.

Sounds good to me. +1

I did Photo 150 for two years - that was enough!

Week 50 always comes at a difficult time for me - too much else going on. So another prime week would appeal, as would a celebration of the Rokkor. A new film thread would get me to use film again. Of course, a Rokkor 35 week on film would kill three birds with one stone, as it were

Generally speaking I’m less likely to sign up for a month long challenge, so more of the shorter challenges would appeal - can they co-exist with a month challenge, or would that limit the number of participants in either?

Of the suggested challenges I like the Rokkor ( Minolta SR Mount) and Macro the best and continue with the traditional yearly Dyxum challenges and of course, always include a film challenge.

I would like a helios, BW and colors. Sometimes real life intrudes upon me too much to participate. I tend to not join the month long ones for this reason.

Agreed, as the year went on, it started to feel more like a chore than a challenge.

I've done a couple of month-challenges in the past, but unless it coincides with an unusually 'calm' period in the year, it's out of reach. I don't think I've had a 'calm' month in years.

Weekly challenges are also more appealing. I've got better odds of finishing these.

Two comments Heikki, first it's possible to use "event passes" during these prime month to take care of special events (like bird migrations or other special events) that requires a significant different lens from your one or two chose primes.
Secondly, as Addy mentioned, pic-a-day is not a requirement, there's many other formula's like 7/week and spread over the daily postings, or just do 3/week and only post on the days you took photos, or find another scheme that suits your availability. We believe participation is more important than following very strict (restricting) rules.

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated!

Trying to distill it down to a plan how about this for 2023:

late february : Rokkor 65th birthday party
April Foolishness with one or two primes (event passes possible)
late may: B&W (or monochrome)
July: a potpourri:
     - week 1: colours (only single primary or secondary colours)
     - week 2 = week 28 (28 +/- 2 mm zoom-ends or primes, or even "taped" zooms at ~28 mm)
     - week 3: music
     - week 4: macro/closeup
Fixed weeks, but everybody free to do all or just the ones they like/have time for
late september: Zoom, in the range, so don't use the zoom ends
Oktoberfest with one or two primes (event passes possible)
December: week 50

This is probably the maximum we can pull off, and if you all think it's too much we can easily skip a few week topics and keep them for 2024.

I would be more likely to participate in the April and October events if it were possible to select just 1 or 2 weeks out of the month to participate.

I own many (too many) 35mm film cameras and lenses. Sticking to just one camera for an entire month as quite long for me; especially, as shooting with my A7II for a month means no film for the entire month.

Thank you, Pieter!
I'll participate as often as possible!

Seems like a plan!

Not sure that a challenge in late September is well timed with Oktoberfest so close - late August, early September perhaps?

Might I suggest a possible official pass for Oktoberfest could be Week 42 (Oct 15 to 22) - M42 lenses (any FL - though the purists might opt to match their AF FLs from the rest of the month).
