Is the Sony F/3,5-4,5 24-105mm a sub-par lens?? Well, it is certainly not on par with the CZ lenses (and some other high quality lenses as well). When my Tamron F/3,5-5,6 24-135mm broke on a trip through New England, Shay (rovhazman) lent me his copy of the Sony lens and I have used it now extensively. It is sharp, vignetting is by far not as bad as I expected (the Tamron is worse), it is not prone to flare, it is a small lightweight lens and I particularly like the Sony finish. I miss the last 30mm in focal range but 105mm at the long end is still very good.
A modern constant F/4 24-105mm or a 24-120mm lens by Sony/Zeiss would be my dream.
The following images underwent only a minimum of PP (repairing the tilted horizon etc.) - with the exception of #10-12.

The images have been taken during two days on Deer Isle, Maine. All images: Sony SLT-A99V and Sony F/3,5-4,5 24-105mm.

Lovely shots with a relaxed atmosphere. I like #6 and 9 most. TFS

No dust problems!
I just wanted to show that even if you do not tweak the image files the IQ of the lens is quite acceptable. Of course you could give the photos more (color) contrast (the punch is in the RAW!).

@TheEmrys: I am not sure which of the three 35-80mm Minolta lenses the "shuttercap" is (the oldest?), one of these three gets quite a good rating in the lens database (the newest - BTW: your are not suggesting a DPC with "crap" lenses?). As long as you know the weaknesses of your lens you can try to avoid them (e.g. nasty bokeh) and still create some good images. Since my Tamron has to be sent off to get repaired I will be probably using a very, very old other Tamron lens (28-300mm) - I know that it starts to show acceptable sharpness only at F/8 - so I will have to live with that!
