Isosaari (Mjölö in Swedish) is one of the outer islands in Helsinki, Finland.

1. Like many islands near Helsinki, Isosaari used to be in military use and there is quite a lot evidence of this like this coastal artillery gun

2. Fort Isosaari

3. Still firmly behind fences and off limits for us civilians

4. In Peninniemi on the eastern end of the island there is a former torpedo test station

5. Inside torpedo test station

6. After torpedo testing ceased, the building was used also for marine research

7. One interesting feature on the island is a 9-hole golf course, behind one of the older fortifications

8. Western coastline

9. Southern coastline

10. A small sand beach on the northern shore

11. Sauna jetty in winter

12. During the Crimean war Anglo-French fleet made some attacks in Baltic Sea shores and George Quinnell of HMS Amphion was one casualty of this incursion and found his last resting place in Isosaari

13. After Finnish Civil War (1918), the winning white side founded number of prison camps for those who participated in the war on the red side, one of the prison camps was in Isosaari and this is a memorial for those reds who lost their lives

Fascinating set, Heiki!

I very much like the coastal scenes - my favorites are #8, #10 and #11. Is there really a Winter schedule for ferries to this island? Are there still living people on it? Or is the military the exclusive user of it?

TFS!

There is no longer any permanent military presence on this island and it was opened for the public in 2017. At least few years ago, there was one (1) permanent resident on the island, but there is no year around scheduled traffic, so you would need your own boat or charter a water taxi. My visits to the island have been always been birding trips and usually the local birding society has arranged a charter boat.

14. One more coastal shot
