A good deal is obviously one good reason, but weight/performance wise where do you expect the greatest advantage?

I have noticed the prices of the 200-600 have come down since the 400-800 came out, I saw a 2nd hand 200-600 incl. a cammo-lenscoat for 999 Euro at a shop in Antwerp but I resisted since I already have the Tammy 150-500 that doesn't see too much use and I guess the 200-600 would see even less airtime since it's a lot heavier.

Wow, defending the purchase of a Sony lenses🤣.

I use these lenses never for a walk, just picking it from the seat next to me.

There's no need tyo defend it Harm (we all understand GAS) and vs. the Sigma weight is very similar. I was just wondering in what aspects it might be different (better?) in practical use. For instance when comparing my Tammy vs. Domien's Sony 100-400 on his A1 AF speed and tracking of the Sony was better. However on my A7Rii the two lenses behaved very similar. Looking forward to your findings once you get used to the new lens.

Main reason: I want this lense for long and imho the Sigma has more unfocused shots than I hoped. Plus, the Sigma is getting longer when extending to larger focus lengths, which I dislike actually.

It's not only lighter, the Tamron is a third smaller - that is the main reason I decided on the Tamron. It also has better magnification numbers.

You purchasing a Sony lens pays for the development of my 28/1.4G - no other reason needed

I prefer extending zoom lenses as it is an easy visual cue for the set focal length. It also makes the lens smaller. But I seem to be an exception.

Congratulations, Harm! With the successful sale your house and your buying of a new lens—what a great achievement. The 200-600 is considerably larger and less easy to handle, but on the other hand, it’s sharper and faster. A fantastic choice! Best of luck with your upcoming move.

It's not really GAS when you replace one lens with another. The Sony has a lot of advantages.

I confess I have been pondering the 400-800mm for the bird photography at the local beach. The extra 200mm over the 200-600mm at the long end is tempting.

But to date, I've still not bought any new lenses since my last purchase (1 August 2023).

Am heading back to China for 3 weeks on Friday, so should have some shots to show afterward.

I also managed to procure a 200-600 2nd hand (it wasn't too far away at a reasonable price).

I'll have to sell some lenses, because the closet is now overstuffed.
We'll sell the sigma 150-500 - due to a-mount and more or less the same length.

It's not Harm's fault, i was already looking for a 100-400 or 200-600. And it became the 200-600. You'll find me in Neerijse the next few weeks with sunny weather (in the bird hidings - this one will fit the whole - my 600f4 is too big).

I originally ordered a new one, but changed my mind: tomorrow I'll collect an as good as new second hand one.
