2024 July "Potpourri" challenge

Welcome to the Dyxum July challenge for 2023!
July 8 - July 28
This is the thread to sign up for this Challenge.

This July, we are inviting members to take part in a challenge that consists of three very different weekly challenges.

Every participant can choose to do one or two weeks of their choosing, or participate in all three.

This is designed to cater to the wishes of people who prefer weekly challenges as well as those members who like longer ones. The reason we skipped the first week of July is since it worked well last year (and we started planning for it too late )
Basic rule for all weeks is to use only A- or E-mount cameras, but for film diehards we’ll make room for Minolta SR mount cameras as well.

”Week 28”, Monday July 8 until Sunday July 14

Very similar rules to our classic week 50:
1. Take photographs every day and post one picture for each day in the thread. Pic-a-day mainly! If there’s a day you really can’t go out to shoot we’ll allow one “rain check” with a photo taken on a different day.

2. Shoot for the whole week with one or many 28 mm (+/- 2 mm) lens(es) (if you do not have a prime – fixed focal length - you can shoot using a zoom, fixed to 28mm, but you cannot change the focal length during the week – we suggest you tape it). So called Lens Turbo's or Speed Boosters to achieve FF FOV on APS-C bodies are allowed as well as extension tubes - as long as the lens used is in the 26-30 mm range. We discourage the use of tele converters, since they start deviating from the 28 mm FOV too much, and really don’t make a lot of sense on a 28 mm lens anyway.

3. Because the point is to shoot only one angle of view, only minimal cropping is allowed to straighten, etc. However, you may crop ONE SIDE in order to present a picture in a square or other format planned when you took the shot (the point is that you compose in the viewfinder/LV and not on the computer).

4. We’ll create daily threads for this week. If you don't have time to process/post on the day you took the photo no problem, just catch up later when you have time to do so

”Black & White”, Monday July 15 until Sunday July 21

1. Take 7 photo’s during the week that you convert to B&W

2. Any lens goes

3. We’ll create daily threads for this week even though the challenge is not mandatory pic-a-day. You can take your photo’s anywhere during the week and post one (and not more than one) in every daily thread. However if you want to challenge yourself more feel free to do pic-a-day this week as well

”(semi) abstract”, Monday July 22 until Sunday July 28

1. Take 7 photo’s during the week that are (semi) abstract, sometimes this is hard to define but one thought is to emphasise light, shape, texture and colour and make the viewer almost forget the actual object that is used in your photo.

2. We’ll create daily threads for this week even though the challenge is not mandatory pic-a-day. You can take your photo’s anywhere during the week and post one (and not more than one) in every daily thread. However if you want to challenge yourself more feel free to do pic-a-day this week as well

By now you might understand the use of the "advertising photo" at the top of this post, except for the day it was taken it meets all the criteria for all three July challenge weeks, i.e. it's taken with a 28 mm lens, converted to B&W as well as a semi-abstract

If you don’t feel challenged enough by what we’re saying here pls. realise that these are “minimum guidelines”, so feel free to add more stringent personal challenges to the ones here. The only limit is your own imagination.

Obviously we’ll create talk, outtake and thumbnail threads for the whole challenge and plan to do an exhibition afterwards.

So sign up below (pls. indicate which of the weeks you’ll be participating) or if you have questions this is the right place to ask as well.

I'll give it a go. Haven't produced anything for a while, need to get back into the groove.

A real challenge it is - the instructions are clear, so it seems like a good idea to join the event (it may get boring while i'm in the middle of some big renovation projects at work - but there' a lot of abstract things to photograph it seems).
It may be Mario-Bross time who knows.

I think I will challenge myself with the latter two themes, not sure about the 28 mm focal length, my current lens collection is lacking a decent lens for that focal length.

Mmmm, I'll start with the first week, the other two I'm in France with no internet yet (on the laptop). As soon as that is provided, I'll try to join one or maybe two of the others.

I'll give each of the three a go. Some time since I did one of these - think I have a Vivitar Series 1 28/1.9 up in the top room...

Hello everyone! Since I'm currently pretty busy looking after my wife and hardly have time to take photos, I'm not sure if I can contribute anything to the challenge - but I want to try.
Probably for the first two weeks.

Welcome Robbie, we'll grant you some extra slack on the pic-a-day guideline so you have a little more flexibility in line with your caretaker activities.

Count me in, Pieter - I think I can manage! Maybe I have to skip one of the weeks, but I will try my best!
