Had the pleasure of going to the keywest Airshow at the beginning of April. Key west is were I grew up and I still have many friends their so I make forays there pretty frequently. I was excited to try out the new a6400 which I got from B&H two days before the airshow. I really wanted to put its new tracking system through its paces. (little spoiler it nailed 100 percent of the jet shots in focus. No misfocused shots.) I had to shoot everything in jpeg as I still have the old version of lightroom. I rarely shoot in anything but raw but actually found the jpeg rendering from the 6400 to be the best I have ever seen. Anyways the first series from the airshow will be some static shots and prop planes. The next series or two will involve jet planes. The a6400 performed really well. I am very happy with it. I would say its af performance is right there with the d500 which my neighbor has and which I use. He has the new pf500 lens with that combo. Btw very nice light combo. Anyways here are the pics from series one.

Hi Chris,

I like a really good airshow and haven't been to one for ages - but this makes for a great alternative so far!

I'm not sure how kind the light was for you - it looks like very bright conditions and direct light but you've managed to control flare and high spots from the sun really well and the colours are just lovely.

You also have two of my all-time favourite aircraft in the series so far; the F4U which, outside of the USA, still appears very underrated; and the Thunderbolt; plug-ugly but oh-so effective as you say.

As jpegs it a good series and, other than with the Corsair where you have a higher prop speed and panning to deal with, the prop blur is well managed and just about right.

One comment and one question: first, please number your images (it makes referring to them a whole lot easier    ), and the question - how easy was it to hold/pan etc. with the 6400 as they don't seem to have a lot to hold on to with a big lens on the front?

Looking forward to seeing the other sets and thanks for posting this starter set!

best regards, Neil.
My Mantra: "Comment on other's work as you would wish to have yours commented upon". Go on - it's fun!

Updated the numbers Owen. Have no idea why I forgot to do this. As far as the 6400 goes handholding, the grip is a little fatter than previous models and I found it a tad more comfy. I shot the camera with the 100-400 fe all day. The light weight combo was great. Thier were tons of guys thier with the D500 200-500 combo with fatigued arms. They all were asking me questions about my combo as itís half the weight of theirs and half the size as well. They were amazed when they looked at my images in the viewfinder that my little outfit outpaced theirs. I think I won a few converts that day. Btw the meike and neewer a6300 grip fits and works on the 6400. I recieved it last week. Works like a charm so if you have reservations about using this tiny body with bigger lenses slap the grip on.

Btw Owen swing on back when I post my blue angels in flight shots. That will give you a better appreciation for the focus tracking system. There will be some great shots in that set.

I really like these! Nice and clean. Especially the Vought F4U Corsair - beautiful plane. TFS.

Man! really some of the best plane photos I've ever seen. Sharp, crisp and clear, excellent colors. I would think the lens had something to do w that. The jpegs work really well. I've heard Sony's crop camera's are suited for Jpeg? I have the 6000 and 6500, just for the size and weight factor. Personally I think they are really attractive cameras also, I like the rangefinder look. I've been w the bulky Canon camera guys and they're long heavy lens'. Thats when I really appreciate mine.

I'm looking at your pics and wondering, how the heck, in this day of ultra-hi security you got on the flightline? You look really close to the row of F-18's. Reminds me of my photo I took down on the flightline of the Air Force Thunderbirds lined up, but I was in the Air Force and stationed on the base.

BTW the Thunderbirds were flying f-4's at the time or as we knew them "flying bricks". I have posted that picture here in Dyxum of that day as well as A Buff and a Hustler, both in service
Perfect pics of the Corsair. The Warthog, is an interesting plane to have as an all time favorite, although I understand how the Tank Buster can be. This one looks like it has scored a few hits w that crazy Gatling gun. Mine is the Starfighter

Unfortunately, I don't have mine, auto/focus tracking that well. I'm hesitant to use a full frame lens on it, just because I bought a crop camera to use a crop lens. In keeping w, trying to stay as light weight and compact as possible. Your combo looks really good! Congratulations on your new camera and the excellent pictures you and it have produced. Looking forward to more _________Joe

Excellent series, saying "she does it parashute free" in #4 and then seeing #5 made me worry a little bit
Mind the bandwidth of others, don't link pictures larger then 1024 wide or 960 pix high, see here

Excellent work Chris! A 100% score sounds impressive! Looking forward to your next set (although I saw some great pics on your Flickr account already )
