There was a formal announcement that the LA-EA3 was discontinued in Japan. It has disappeared from the Sony store immediately.

Good that I have two. I wonder, what is Sony's master plan?

Everybody using E-mount

I do not know how reliable this site is, but it makes sense. By now, almost everybody using A-mount will have a LA-EA3 and the second hand market will have enough of these for the few people who don't. I guess they are selling only a few recently.

But if they terminated the LA-EA3, what about the LA-EA4?

Interesting to note that the A77 II is also going out of production, and the article says that the only A-Mount camera will be the A99 II, which implies that the A68 is also no longer manufactured.

I'm not sure that it's great news for the A-Mount overall - perhaps Sony have been secretly reading the oft-debated forums on 'Is the A-Mount Dead?". It's not terribly reassuring to be honest and looks like it will ultimately be wrapped up in terms such as 'cost effectiveness' and 'rationalisation following a review of the marketplace' - which is always amusing as they have strangled that so it becomes inevitable...

Best regards, Neil.

The A68 was not sold in Japan. It is an overseas model.

The comment was really tongue in cheek but I don't think I was a "non-believer", only highly sceptical in the time that:
- Sony and some other sources said it couldn't be done
- There was no proof to the contrary

Now with the recent "monster adapter" stories it seems possible for some lenses and only the newer bodies, still I am eagerly waiting for some test results to see if all body AF options are available for all lenses.

Irrespective it it works or not, or if it's a DIY home job or a Sony branded product I don't think I will buy one but would very much like the fact it is available, not just to stop the complaining that there's no options for old A-mount lenses to use all the bells and whistles of the newer bodies , but also because it breathes new life into old A-mount glass for the people who think they can't properly use them today.

I fail to see the link to where Sony made the formal announcement on the page you provided. The la-ea3 it's still available to purchase if you follow the links on the same page.

---
Edit: I see now they have the message "Production completed" for the LA-EA3
It's not exactly an announcement, we can speculate on the meaning of this but only time will tell. My guess is that for the number of current sales they should have enough in stock for the foreseeable future and there is always the LA-EA4 as an "alternative".

I checked the big US sites, Adorama and Samy's still show the LA-EA3 as available. However, B&H defaults to the LA-EA4 and states there is no listing for the LA-EA3. THAT says discontinued to me!

Is the form of "Sony shop" unique to Japan? They deal only with SONY products, and supply information is directly transmitted from SONY. Formal may be overstated, but it is very accurate information.
And SONY is not the same operation all over the world. There are also models such as the DSLR-A850 and ILCE-3000 that were not sold in Japan because they were considered to have no demand. Since the A65 was hardly sold in Japan, the A68 is for overseas use only.
This time it will be gone because of "no parts", but it may be possible to distribute the inventory to countries where the transition to E-Mount is slow.
There is already only LA-EA4 on the accessories page of SONY Japan's online store.

Some may remember my love for 3x-1x macros. LA-EA4 does not recognize this lens. Even if you attach it to the camera, you will not be able to use the aperture because it will be "no lens".
AF is not possible with LA-EA3, but it recognizes it properly and can use the aperture.
I have high expectations for "LA-EA4r Monster Adapter".

Didn't knew that there was that limitation with the LA-EA4. It's also far from perfect with SSM lenses that why I used the word in quotes.
