I think I can be persuaded to buy an LA-EA5. Or I could use my A99....

The lens or LA-EA4 aren't a problem if you want to use this on lens on an E mount body . Just fit a new chip from James Loa . I replaced the electric contacts of a Minolta 2x tele-converter with one so I could mount a Minolta 300mm f/4 lens on it and still have AF and use it on E mount bodies . The chip reports itself as a 600mm f/4 , so image stabilization works just fine . ( I swapped it over as a snapped the ribbon cable whilst cleaning the elements of the tele-converter ) See here where I made a post about it ; https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/60010907 The fella asking in that thread had a lens whose chip was dead , so bought one for that reason . It'll still work fine on an A mount body . Just remember the chip needs to report another lens i.d so image stabilization needs to be switched off ( which it would do automatically with this lens anyway ) Also any micro focus adjustment might be thrown out if you had the chip programmed with an i.d of a lens you also have . Please note these chips can't be used to replace the contacts on SSM lenses , as you remove any connections to the motor . Edited by neilt3 - 20 July 2020 at 00:43 |

The LA-EAx does not support tele-converter either.
I think a good solution is to replace the lens side chip and make the TC chip unreadable. One day, I'll be wondering if this can be applied. Thank you for the nice information. It would be nice if SONY released the LA-EA4's Filmware that released the trivial restrictions, or the development environment. |

It is possible to 'de-chip' a TC by lifting some of the pins and adding wire links. I did that to a 5-pin Kenko TC with a dead chip but haven't checked the pin connections that would be needed on an 8-pin. It's a pity there don't seem to be any cheap E-mount TCs. A 1.4x would be useful to use E lenses on the A7 range without cropping. |

FWIW: Kenko teleconverters work on all of the LA-EA adapters. The DGX models enable working AF with motorized lenses. Swapping the Kenko DGX electronics into the first-party teleconverter sounds like a possible solution to me. The Monster modified LA-EA4r doesn't work with the Kenko teleconverters, but supposedly will work with the first-party ones. Edited by QuietOC - 12 January 2021 at 13:31 |
