A known issue that has been talked about several times in this forum. It can be recovered by connecting a USB power supply. Don't forget the USB power supply and cable when you go out. ![]() The following is just a guess. For some reason, the battery protection works and the battery becomes a brick. External power is required for resetting. Every time I update it, I change the lens and test it. It hangs up for a while. Accustomed. ![]() |

The battery issue is discussed in the Monster Adapter forum, and that does arise in some cases. However in a small number of cases the actual camera main board has been affected. And required replacement. The WARNING is clear:
ENSURE THE CAMERA IS TURNED OFF WHEN REPLACING A LENS! |

It's hard to say a warning because it's easy to say and almost impossible to comply with. I want to narrow down the conditions a little more.
However, it is difficult to test that the board may break. Can you give me a link to the original article? |

Thank you for the link. My understanding is as follows. 7II is having problems and is troubleshooting. Respond to firmware updater.(w/ external power) Replacing with another battery, which is the definitive solution, has not been done. It seems that the board was replaced at 6400, but the details are unknown. I guess it's a guess, but the protection circuit of the FW-50 battery is unrecoverable like a fusible link, and the Z battery may be made of a recoverable element like PolySwitch. ?? |

Official Notification on Monster Adapter Facebook page:
Turn off the camera before changing lenses. Especially with A7ii. Warning about the use of the LA-EA4r!!! As many of you have noticed Don Williams' post about how his a7II has bricked, please go through it to the end where the experiences and thoughts exchanged should be very useful for you to prevent the same from happening to you. Here is the post link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/572060616797245/permalink/687146661955306/ First of all we'd like to thank Don and other members for the sharing in the post and we think it's extremely necessary to remind all our users again that the instructions mentioned on the package of our board as well as the Sony's for the original LA-EA4 must be remembered and followed, and the most important one, as Don has concluded in the end, is NEVER to attach/detach the lens/adapter when the camera is still ON. Moreover, try your best to only use the officially supported lenses and the Minolta/Sony native lenses with your MonsterAdapter LA-EA4r because they have been physically tested as safe to use. We don't want to see any more cameras bricked for totally avoidable reasons so please pay attention to this warning and enjoy your shooting without pains. |

Can anyone comment on the relative AF capabilities with this, versus before modification?
I ask because my impression of using the A7Rii is that on-sensor PDAF works very well for small focus errors, but for large focus errors - especially on long telephoto lenses - it loses PDAF more quickly than the A-mount PDAF setup, choosing a direction more or less randomly. This could be because the A-mount's larger mechanical assembly detects the correct way to go even with fairly large focus errors (macro excepted). |

My experience has been positive. With my 200mm f2.8G AF speed is about the same as when I used the original LA-EA4. The bonus is that I have far more AF points to choose from. In low light, I think the AF speed and accuracy is about the same as before. |

The A7RII phase-detection is pretty weak. Mine was just struggling with a 70-300 F4-5.6. The old 15-point sensor in the LA-EA4 works in much more challenging conditions.

Ah, thanks. Something to balance against the focus modes of OSPDAF.

Anyone have a working link to the V03 firmware?
I would like to use the Tamron 90mm F2.5 with the LA-EA4r. It worked fine with V03 and doesn't work with V04. |

I don't know a valid link, but I have a v03 binary. I don't have LA-EA4r anymore so I can't confirm, but is it possible to downgrade Firmware? Isn't it better to ask the author to support it with v05? |

Gary Friedman has sent out a final email to those interested in his work on the Monster adapter.
"Hi there! Gary Friedman here again. This will be my final post about the monster adapter. I finally had time to create a youtube video with low production values, showing the differences between the Sony LA-EA5 and the Monster Adapter with Firmware v4. You can see it here: https://youtu.be/Xy4GZURBkF0 The Monster adapter is much more reliable than in the past, and now even supports some 3rd party lenses. Below is a summary of the differences between these two adapters:" Regretfully, I have not been able to correctly format Gary's table and include it here. "So will I be taking this project on? Regretfully no, as I simply do not have the time. I’ll be moving again shortly and we plan on spending many months on the road in the coming years, making mail-order modifications a difficult thing to do. You can purchase the board here https://www.ebay.com/itm/MonsterAdapter-LA-EA4r-Upgrade-kit/224267929385?hash=item3437690729:g:19EAAOSwjPtfQmT8 , and don’t forget my video showing my first attempt at the microsurgery is here: https://youtu.be/9a-NuV3fW4E That’s it for now. Thanks for your interest and enthusiasm for this project (and for your patience for promised updates!) Sincerely, Gary" |

Interesting video.
My take aways. I think the LA-EA5 is quicker (if your camera supports it ![]() The LA-EA4r is useable. I would not like the step AF character of the LA-EA4r. In fact, it is the way the A7r2 handles adapted SSM/SAM lenses and I do not like it. The A7r4 is much, much better with the LA-EA1/3 then the A7r2. I see four reasons to get the LA-EA4r: 1) you like the fact that a third party made it (or you hate Sony limitations) 2) you like to tinker 3) you want to save some money 4) you want to use the outer focus area with the 500mm mirror Did I miss anything? |
