Lake District Vac - Day 5B

   Hi everyone, 

After a lengthy day in and around Grasmere, we travelled up the road to Castlerigg Stone Circle. More on it's background and history can be found here, but we arrived late in the afternoon and that helped add an element of atmosphere to the location. This post will consist of colour and B&W images as I felt some of the scenes worked better one way than the other. I hope you enjoy the following set:

3. Towards the Peaks

4. Leaning Stone

5. Light on Yonder Hillside

6. Power of the Stone

7. Three Stones

8. Four Stones

9. Five Stones

10. Opposing 

11. Light Beyond

12. Closing In

Very dramatic and, I suspect, in the right conditions, possibly also quite an odd place to visit. It's also very challenging to get a good perspective due to the number of visitors (and children...) and the popularity means quite a few wear patterns in the grass as well to try and keep down.

	I love Victoria Toning and if I hadn't seen The Circle I would REALLY love it. There's a very minor difference (other than the color) and, to my eye, it seems to make a big difference - the top of the center tall rock in the color sits just below the top of the background hillside directly behind it, whereas in the color version the top of that rock covers the top of the distant hillside and for some reason I don't like that nearly as much. Hope that makes sense and I am curious if that is just me; it seems to be such a minor difference.

	Number 11 for me is just awesome. Love the extra light on the unfocus rock and the vignette on the others.

	Neil, These are a fine presentation of this important ancient monument. I particularly like the ones with shallow DOF, of which #6 is my favourite, although I agree that #11 showing the circle within its amphitheatre of mountains is particularly fine. Where was your heavy-lift camera bearing drone when you needed it? TFS.

	Fascinating set, Neil! The stone circle is a real challenge, photographically - I think you did best with #3 (and going B/W is helping it - I lie to think of the whole stone age that it was B/W). My favorite, though, is #5 - what a great light! TFS!

	Hi Folks, Thanks for the feedback and comments - most welcome! There were two main challenges here - the first being trying to deal with the excessive wear in some places on the circle, the other with the number of people wandering round. I think the lateness of the day helped with the latter item and the former 'issue' pushed me into the more detailed images of small groups of stones. Many of these were taken with the 135/1.8G lens so I was also standing quite a way away from them but the bonus was the relatively shallow DoF that produced. Still 'playing' with B&W from this vacation; I think it's a good source of locations for that treatment but the image needs to be 'right' as well to get the most out of that effect.
