Very true. The obsession with MTF50 (which measures contrast and resolution together) is comparatively recent. Through the 1960s and 70s, resolution was measured at the level where line pairs were just distinguishable (MTF10?). Many lenses of the period actually have very high resolution, but low contrast so they look flat or soft. B/w users could use high-accutence developers that regained edge contrast. The revelation later was that users didn't care about resolution - what they wanted was contrast -'bite' and lens design moved to that. Now, with high-Mp digital cameras, it is going back again... ![]() Edited by Miranda F - 23 March 2021 at 07:32 |

The reason why I like having more contrast is for having less flat looking images.
Anyway, this is shot I took last monday with the speedbooster and the MD 50/2. I like this combo. https://www.amazon.it/clouddrive/share/xAkhK4OrbzYyZFNf92vKBUf933Ey0EEbU2sd86FXrnp |

Yes, nice contrast, but so easy to raise in camera or afterward. Now if I'd taken that picture, I'd probably have aimed the camera up a bit and right, then turned it portrait mode and pointed it up and down, than decided to walk closer. ![]() ... And then later on the computer, wish I'd pointed the camera somewhere else. ![]() Of course now I have the A7Rii I don't need to worry about all that framing cr*p. I can just stick an UW on and crop it later. ![]() ![]() (Just joking!) |

I just received a MDII 24/2.8 in nice conditions. I will give him a try as I let the 28 go, then I will start saving for the 85 to fill the gap between the 50 and the Elmar 135/4.
