Coromandel Mangroves
Not a Minolta or Sony but an example of images I sell. These are printed on high quality cotton rag roll paper with my Epson 4800 large format printer. This particular shot was made on my Fujica 6x9 medium format camera and cropped to this height. The high res image prints beautifully to 400mm x 1,050mm ![]() In the Heat of Summer by Michael J Breen, on Flickr Fujica G690. Fujinon 180mm lens. Kodak TMax 100 film. |

Cathedral Cove
Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand This one IS an Alpha shot! ![]() I was still on crutches and it was a long walk down to the beach so I used our Sony RX10 for this shot. Colours are true but accentuated a little in edit (not a lot though!) ![]() Cathdral Cove by Michael J Breen, on Flickr Sony DSC-RX10 f/3.2 32.3 mm 1/200 125 iso Flash (off, did not fire) |

That's one of those shots that seems perfect for a message to be scrawled across it: "Welcome Home" Happy Birthday" Congratulations" etc |

Karekare Beach
Did you ever see the film "The Piano"? If you haven't, it's worth a look. Starring Harvey Keitel, Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin; this is a realistic tale of the sadness of European settlement of New Zealand for three people. One of my old friends owned a lovely home at the beach and I'd visit him regularly. On this occassion, I took my Cambo Wide 4x5 camera loaded with Fuji Velvia. It was twilight and I was really happy to capture this image of the beach where the film is set. Karekare Beach, and the whole west coast where this beach is located, is black ilmenite sand. In summer, it gets so hot you can barely walk across it! ![]() Karekare Beach by Michael J Breen, on Flickr |

Desert Beauty
I was studying Mandarin in China in 1997 and, while I was there, my wife came over for a holiday. She had been made redundant from her job at New Zealand Post and had the time to visit. While there, I helped her apply for a job with IBM NZ in telecommunications (her specialty);d she got that contract with the first posting being in Namibia. I wasn't able to go with her as I still had some months left to study but she was posted there two more times and I went with her for the 2nd. That was the start of our third round of international travel which lasted about 6 years. I had been living and studying at the edge of the Gobi desert in central China so I thought I knew what to expect going to Windhoek in Namibia: I was wrong. The two deserts could hardly be more different. The Gobi is a barren expanse of mainly gravel but with some very large sandy areas in places (Dunhuang etc). I expected the same sand as in the Gobi. However; the Namib Desert is more like an Australian landscape with trees scattered around and lots of wildlife albeit very dry much of the time. As I wasn't allowed to work in Namibia, I spent my days cycling around the outskirts of the city exploring that desert. This shot is not from close to the city but from a trip over to Twyfelfontein to see the San Rock Drawings. Finding beauty in the desert took a while but I became accustomed to it and saw beauty for what it was in this ancient place. These plants can get to several metres across. They are very slow growing and can be thousands of years old. ![]() Desert Greenery by Michael J Breen, on Flickr Voigtlander Bessa L with 35mm lens on Ektachrome 100 |

Black and Blue and Red All Over
A few km north of Karekare Beach is Piha Beach: One of Auckland's most popular surf beaches with both a left and a right break divided by Lion Rock. Another black sand beach; this is popular for many reasons and for me, the surfing and the beauty were why I returned again and again. ![]() Piha Beach Sunset by Michael J Breen, on Flickr I shot this one evening with my Mamiya 645 1000s medium format camera on Fuji Velvia 50 film. |
