re previous posts.. i was uncertain as to whether a sony 70-400 G would give me a significant IQ improvement over my tamron 70-300.
opinions differed, so, as suggested by someone, i thought i might hire one & try it. But i can't find anyone who rents them.. all sony rentals seem to be E fit..

any recommendations (UK_

Individual copies can vary, but the s/h 70-400 I tried was a lot sharper than any of the dozen or so 300mm zooms and primes I've tested, and net reviews generally agree.
But then I would expect it to be sharper: There are good optical and commercial reasons why on long telephoto lenses, the resolution generally increases with front element diameter. If in doubt, ignore anything cheap and pick the one with the largest filter size ...
