I was looking out of a plane window for the first one
![]() The second one, I had a bit of a drive around on my way home from work but it seems so many of the roads round here are unsuitable (eg motorways! Or tall hedges and houses each side.). That was the most interesting view I could find! When it gets a bit higher, I’m hoping to get something out of a bedroom window, if it climbs high enough. That diagram is very useful! |

Thanks for the pointers.
This interactive sky map can also help locate Neowise from your location - link (set for Greenwich tonight, but is adjustable by clicking on place and time links). Friday night is indeed looking promising here in the UK. |

![]() Comet NEOWISE | A7 III and Tamron SP 70-300mm at 70mm/F7.1/ISO1000/10s/manually aligned stack of four images in PS/colour corrected for city lighting It was fortuitous that the comet is aligned in a gap in the trees at the bottom of our garden. I attempted auto alignment in Photoshop and in Registax with no success, so took 4 photos to align them manually. (The ISS was passing over at 23:15 last night in a different part of the sky, but I'm not sure they would both make a useful image together.) Edited by Howard_S - 18 July 2020 at 14:25 |

Is that because of Flickr or something else? I can see it OK here ...
Meantime, here is a second rendering using a couple more frames and DeepSkyStacker ![]() Comet NEOWISE /2 by Howard Stanbury, on Flickr I hope you can see this - it's adjacent to the version I posted earlier on my Flickr stream. |

DeepSkyStacker looks impressive and is free to use. Unfortunately it depends on a library to work with RAW files, and that has not yet been updated to include the camera I used here ... so I worked with 4k res JPG files.
If another clear night comes, I'll try again with my A7 mk 1. |

A first attempt from last night (through the bedroom window :-().
It was quite a struggle.. I couldn't spot it with the naked eye, only with binoculars. Probably too much light polution. Afterwards I found out my duaghter had gone to teh beach. She couldn't spot it on the boulevard, but a few steps on the beach made it visible. With the camery I couldn't find it through te viewer, so it was kind of aiming and shooting in the blind. Well, at least I caught it. Didn't consider stacking of multiple shots, but may give that a try if there is a next occasion. Next time I should include some foreground too.... ![]() A99ii + 70-400mm F5, ISO 1600, 10 sec, 180mm |

Great to see some comet photos! This is a very rare event. I was lucky enough to see it naked-eye last night (although we had to climb the stairs right up to the loft conversion to avoid our neighbour's trees...) It was clearly visible "with averted vision" and nice to view in binoculars.
Naturally, I have a pic in the making but my laptop just doesn't cope well with A99ii raw files. It's a lot of data crunching for a 30x2s stack. Let's hope it's worth the wait. |

Neowise 17 July 2020
![]() A99ii Sigma 70-200/2.8 at 200mm/2.8. 30x 2s exposures stacked. I quite like the detail on the tail but the lack of colour in the stars is disappointing (but expected with 2s exposures) My telescope is 100% unsuitable for this as 1) 1000mm is far too long a FL 2) I had to hang a tripod out of a loft window for this - barely possible with a SLR/Lens combo, let alone a 8KG scope on a 35KG tracking mount ![]() |
